    Hey all,

Wondering what suggestions you had for restoring the steps on my running boards. I imagine some kind of wire wheel on a drill with some primer and paint. But if you've done this before, have recommendations on what kind of paint/primer, or any tips at all, would be greatly appreciated. Just want to refresh the look.

    Thanks.

get them sandblasted and powdercoated. If you do it by hand, sand to bare metal, primer, and paint with an epoxy paint. LOTS of work....You can just get them sandblasted if you dont want powdercoating.

At our shop we build cell tower segments (there are thousands in use). Some localities have us treat them to galvanizing - then powdercoating over that. First they are carefully sand blasted to be sure no rust remains. The galvanizing outfit we use is in Phoenix, AZ but there must be others. The clean parts are sent there and they charge us by the pound.

The resulting coating is really tough and might keep the parts rust free for quite a bit longer. If I buy a steel bumper for my truck - its going to get this treatment.

This^^^^^^. But before you get it sand blasted and powder coated check the price of new sliders or running boards. The prep and powder coating may cost as much as new or more. $189 on Amazon.

At this point in time I would just hit it with a wire wheel and a rattle can of paint. You would probably need to do it every 3 yrs or so, but for being able to just do it with out removing from truck and the cost of the spray paint . Why not.

I restored my step bars into the dumpster and replaced them with used sliders that have been protecting the truck without reducing ground clearance ever since.

The step/sliders on my truck look exactly the same. Sand and pebble blasted by Forest Service roads and desert sand. I like the sliders, but the steps suck.
