just had the cab mount chop done on my truck on the 12th. today I noticed this. grease all over everything on the driver side. i actually put on a latex glove and felt the boot, but i didnt feel anything that felt like a tear, but I know even a small pinhole could cause some grease to spill. Should I finger the shop, or sometimes this just happens?20170628_124927.jpg 20170628_124936.jpg 20170628_124939.jpg

this is common on lifted Tacos. Looks like all of it went on the brake lines though. Did you get some in your wheel well?

Diff drop will help lower the angles a bit, I've also heard you can slide the boot a little further down the axle to create more space between the fins to prevent them from rubbing.

I wonder if a welding dingleberry melted a hole in it.

    enough to go over stuff
diff drop only helps on 1st gens. You can buy a reboot kit at Toyota if you are mechanically inclined. otherwise you can get a whole new axle. Try use OEM and not some cheap aftermarket one.

I've been driving around with a boot torn for years now. I off road a lot and still going strong.

yup. cleaned it up a bit. like i said, still driving it and with no issues for years now. and ive taken it off road several times. and not just through dirt roads, crawling and what not. i have spares in my bed. when they fail, that's when i will change them.

There are a couple threads and YouTube videos on double booting. Keep collar from current boot and put new boot over.

Also @SDHQ OFFROAD sells regular and long travel cv boots. Good stuff!!!

I've noticed that one of my CV boots has a little cut but no grease is coming out "yet", i know i'm gonna be changing it very soon, but i don't want to change the entire axle, i have seen split cv boots that comes with the special glue, do you guys know where i can get them from?

Don't glue em. Buy the kit I listed above from eBay or Amazon. Make sure it comes with the inner and outer boot. Around $50.
    Aftermarket axles suck imo

Don't you have to remove the axle to install this cv boots, with the split CVs you only have to glue them together.

Yes you have to remove axle. For that kit. It's the correct way and will last the longest. I've done it twice. There are write ups and youtube to help. Good luck with whichever way you go

For the work/money involved in this task, why not replace the entire axle? that's what i'm going to do when the time comes.
