We drove from eastern Kansas to South Dakota Thanksgiving weekend. We had a crosswind from the west about 20 to 45 miles an hour. Its made this noise before but not for so long ( about 350 miles). Could not figure out what was causing it. Now any time the wind blows from the drivers side to the passenger it starts up again. Its driving me crazy. Haven't taken it to dealer yet. Any ideas ?

I used to have this same noise with a high crosswind with my 2012. Took it to the dealer (was still under warranty at that time) but of course they couldn't replicate (probably because they just drove it up and down the freeway in the city where there are no crosswinds)... I kept complaining and the service manager said it's likely the windshield and had his windshield guys pull it and re-seal it. It still happens every once in a while but only with a VERY strong crosswind. I've heard it maybe 3 times since they re-seated the windshield 3 years ago.

I get the same noise every time I drive down from SF to LA on the 5. I took it to the dealer and "unable to replicate noise." Anybody have any progress with fixing this?

This is how mine sounds. Saw someone else complain about this in another thread earlier today. And someone posted this video clip:

    All the time!!!
Go to search and type in "Whistling Noise in Crosswind At Highway Speed" this has a lot of answers to your questions and what some people have done to stop it, Tocoma's are famous for this.

So, just FYI. I saw a product demo video from Toyota themselves showcasing the new 2016 Tacomas. And one of the things they actually talked about and SHOWED on the video was placing a little bump on the A pillar to redirect airflow that was passing between the side mirrors and the A pillar of the vehicle. I wonder if that was specifically to combat this stupid kazoo noise. LOL

I kinda have to agree with the person who stated about having the windshield looked at. I had my windshield replaced with a new seal. Bam! No more of that noise. BTW, my windshield broke because the wiper arm slipped out of my hand without the wiper attached and it cracked the windshield.

Hey op I've got the same noise. Had it in a 2012 and now in a 2014. Some people have not even had success with a new seal. and as far as I know, there's not been a universal fix for this one. You can try folding in your side mirror and see if the change in airflow helps. Even though it's not the spot that's making the noise, moving it may alter airflow enough around the A pillar to make a difference. As far as I know, many of us with the problem are just living with it for now.

I've got this noise but for me it comes from around the drivers A pillar and also appears only in strong cross wind. I think it mostly occurs with crosswind coming from the passenger side even though the noise is from the drivers side. Obviously the source of my noise is likely different from others.

I discovered last time it happened barely cracking the drivers window made it almost completely go away. And I mean *barely* cracking - not opening at all but just nudging the window control to reduce tension and contact force on the edge of the glass. In my case I think the driver window is acting as a sound board for a flow induced vibration in the A pillar.

Doesn't happen often, loud and annoying when it does and I'm sure a trip to the dealer is useless because it isn't repeatable.

I'll try folding the mirror next time too - good idea to change flow in that area!

I've also noticed that *barely* cracking the window works to reduce the noise. But then I'm left with a slightly different noise :)

common issue, there was a TSB out for it I believe. dealer should have to reseal the windshield. mine's out of warranty and not covered and it gets pretty bad here in OKC. Once the weather cooperates I need to get out and do it myself.

In my case the window actually is still "closed" so I don't get any increase in noise from it. It is just backed off probably a mm at most just to reduce any tension on the glass. The window is still seated within the seal. It is tricky to get it in this position - on most tries I open it too much and get increased noise because it is actually open a bit.

Do you have the actual TSB or a TSB number? This started happening to mine. My windshield was removed and reinstalled because the roof skin was replaced - some asshat walked on my truck while it was parked. I will go back to the body shop, but I would like to be able to have the dealer look into it as well.

It is NOT the windshield and NOT the mirror. It is the rubber gasket between the door and roof. I tried tracking this bastard down forever and finally got it when my brother was riding with me. You can stick your fingers up between the door and roof and feel the rubber gasket buzzing when it happens. I don't know what to do about it yet but at least I got the source. I used a plastic hang tag for parking at work to jam in there and it stopped it. Will get pics tomorrow if I remember. Again, the mirror may redirect the wind when folded in but the noise is 100% the hollow gasket at the top of the door where it curves.

In that 2nd video the guy is pushing on the upper windshield and it seems to stop it but I think he's just pushing right when the noise coincidentally stops....or he is somehow changing the pressure in the cab. I do know when the door seal is buzzing from a crosswind it will stop if I crack the window a tiny bit (as someone else said) or turn the fan/blower off. It has something to do with a pressure change in the cab making the door seal vibrate like a reed.

There's another thread about "Whistling noise at highway speeds" where I posted what I discovered. And it looks like a few others have come to the same conclusion: The "kazoo" noise from heavy side winds is the upper door seal. My brother was riding with me and pin pointed the source. He stuck my parking tag from work in between the roof and door and it stopped20151222_161355_zpsn5yflmq6_feb72e759248ad65bb31989f402f803d5eba512a.jpg
It seems like Toyota needs to go back to the drawing board with the door seals. Some have tightened them up with dripper line or weather seal. After the Holidays I will be heading to the local hardware store to attempt my own remedies.

My roof has never made that noise but it is in the circumstances you described that my roof rack sounds like a tornado. Never lasts that long cause the conditions have to be perfect but when it does it is annoying. Not as much as yours though.
