What are any members experience of Toyota going beyond the 12 yr from date of service on Tacoma frame rust recall?
    I bought new 4/23/2007
Was checked around 2012?ish and rust proofing applied.

4/19/2019 checked again by dealer (46600mi) for any rust through. Just ahead of the 12yr from date of service end date for the recall. no rust through found.

12 yrs from first date of service ends 4/23/19

2/4/21 state inspection finds rust through approx 3x3 hole right frame rail (49300mi)

My rub is; I know it’s passed the 12 yrs from date or first service which was 4/23/19 but < 3000mi and 21 months later and I have this hole in the frame that I can’t believe if inspected properly in 2019 when the last dealer inspection was done would not have been found.
Called Toyota today 2/4/21 after the state inspection found this hole and they said I’m beyond the 12 yrs. sorry.

Anyone had a anything similar issue with better results than I?
Now I have this pretty nice < 50k miles truck with a hole in the frame. I not a happy camper!

The problem is, you went to a crappy dealer. There very well might not have been a hole at the time of inspection, but guarantee there were spots that were paper thin. When my ‘06 was coming down to the 11th hour, I inspected it myself. There were no holes. I found a suspicious spot and gently tapped with a hammer and a 12mm hole appeared. Then I got it inspected and approved for a frame.

Unfortunately, Toyota corporate doesn’t care at all about the circumstances. 1 day past the 12 year mark and they aren’t obligated by the courts to do anything about your rusty frame and they’re not going to pay for it.

They're not gonna do anything about it sadly. Listen, 4Runner guys (SAME CHASSIS!) didn't even get the 12 year rule.

4Runners are on a 120 chassis if we are comparing similar years affected 03-09, or 150 chassis for 10+. Doesn’t change anything as they also experience rust, but it’s a fully boxed frame, not a c-channel like the Taco. Traps even more shit and hides rust just as bad.

And there is an active lawsuit for the 4Runner frames arguing the rust issue also affects 4Runners, that’s been tied up in court since 2018 lol. Covid certainly didn’t help expedite things.

Right! That's been a fight for YEARS! I thought it was already settled with a big fat "no". Good to know there's at least hope.

That sucks, hopefully it can be fixed. I also have a low mileage truck coming to the end of 12 years and hoping that doesn’t happen to me.

My 2015 is going in for the frame paint next week, my warranty will be until June 2027. Hopefully if it decides to rot a hole it does it before then.

I was curious other peoples experience with this. The dealer is telling me it will only take a day, at most two for them to coat the frame. I was expecting more along the lines of wash and let dry, paint next day, return to the customer the third day. I find it hard to believe it would potentially take them just a working day to wash paint and return the truck to me. I already know the paint traps the rust in there, I don’t need them trapping water under the coating as well..

I hindsight I wouldn’t have had them do mine with that rustproofing stuff by the dealer. I’d used Rust Check rustproofing. A little messy when first applied but it works. https://www.rustcheck.com/

I’m only having them do it to get the frame warrantied, otherwise if you don’t get it inspected/remedied, you aren’t warrantied.

Um, you do realize that they're not going to "paint" it right? It's strictly a waxy coating inside the box sections of the frame. You'll hardly see it all from the outside.

Just curious, what state does your Tacoma live in, and did you ever treat your frame with a product like Fluid Film in your Tacoma's 14-year life?

But Rustcheck doesn't offer what amounts to a 12 year warranty.

I thought the 4Runner's frame was made in Japan like the FJ Cruiser's?

They described it as paint, I was under the impression it’s a black undercoating that kind of stays sticky and doesn’t dry fully. I didn’t know they didn’t apply it to the outside of the frame as well.

That was the old treatment, they have a new treatment for the newer trucks.

I had to unload my 2009 because of the black waxy crap they put on there. It was flaking off left and right with a good amount of rust behind it. Tried to get the dealer to do something about it, but they would not. It was solid as can be in the problem areas, but with the 12 years being up this year I decided to trade it in to avoid issues down the road. They sold the truck less than a week later. Hopefully the person who bought it knows what's gonna happen eventually if they don't take care of it.

You are right. As I stated above they are on a 120 chassis (at least for 4th gen 4Runner, and FJ). Different than a Tacoma. That being said rust issues also occur on the 4Runner platforms. It’s a boxed frame and will eventually develop rust on the inside in harsh winter environments. My personal opinion is Toyota’s frame coat spec is rather weak for these particular US environments, maybe fine elsewhere in the JDM or Australian markets. I mean let’s be real, if the Dana issue was “solved” and now metalsa is making frames, yet this rust bullshit persists, then it seems something is wrong with the root formula. Why in the hell would the Tacoma be the isolated problem at this point. To me it’s a scapegoat so no one else goes looking at the other lineup. But that’s all purely hypothetical conspiracy tier thought lol.

Well hopefully the newer treatment holds up. I bought the truck in September and would like to keep it for quite some time. Nothing a frame patch down the road can’t fix I guess
