Shifter Bushing Replacement

While replacing my clutch, I noticed the shifter bushing was in chunks. I ordered a Marlin Crawler Delrin bushing. The rubber washer from the original bushing has been removed, yet I still can't get the locking ring to budge! I drilled a very small hole in the locking ring in order to insert a pointed scribe so I could get some "pull" on the ring - still nothing. Any tips?

Also, after ordering the Marlin Crawler bushing for the shifter, touched the intact t-case shifter bushing and it crumbled! Not wanting to get stuck with Marlin Crawler's $12.38 minimum shipping charge (for a 1/2 oz. part) TWICE, I purchased a stock bushing at Camelback Toyota. After removing the rubber washer from the T-case shifter housing, I'm having trouble fitting the snap ring on this shifter, too.

I'll see if I can enlist the third hand of a friend to see if that does it, but any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

 

The first time I did it, I had to push and twist really hard. Like it left marks/pain on my fingers for half an hour. It feels impossible, so if you are pushing it in and turning at the same time and it feels like you are going to cut off your fingers, you must be getting close.
If my memory is correct, you can unbolt the entire top of the transmission and work on it at your bench. You'll need RTV for reassembly. It's the 4 bolts around the shifter area.

 

It’s a huge pain sometimes to get the ring in and locked. I used some channel locks while i had a buddy keep it pressed down hard, I turned and locked it in and it made it easy.

 

Almost everyone has issues getting the Marlin Crawler's bushing in. Get an OEM bushing from the dealer
if the Martin bushing is not going in. If the original bushing is crumbling you should see a night and day difference with either bushing, it’s a ten minutes job with the OEM part

 

How does this little boot slide on? From the bottom or the top? Mine's separating and I'm going to replace it when I do the bushing but having never had the shifter out and apart, I can't tell how that boot gets to be in the middle of the shifter!

 

From the top, take the Top knob off and use some light oil on the stick shift to help it slide on

Just to update on my experience with the Marlin Crawler Delrin shift bushing: I laid a piece of course wet-or-dry sandpaper on a flat surface; with a back and forth rubbing motion, sanded the bushing thinner until it fit. It took several tries until I had the correct thickness. It's all back together and works great now.

 

Does anybody know the OEM part numbers for the seat and socket?

 

I just ordered them yesterday from Amazon. Dealership said they have to look into price and availability and will call me back. Never heard from 'em...

FYI - I do have a 5 lug but I'm pretty sure the part numbers are the same.

 

i think i have to do this repair, always gets sticky shifting into second and probably should be smooth as butter
not sure why the mechanic did not replace this when he had all this apart to replace the gaskets he said were leaking

 

this could be the problem as well
how the heck am i supposed to know what or which it is

 

Redline transmission oil will definitely help FYI

 

thanks, i just had that changed about 16k miles ago, i will see what was used, it did not change the condition
it usually gets more sticky in the colder freezing temps, which are just around the corner here

 

I had Amsoil in before and it did help my one gear that was hard to get into, 3rd If I remember

 

I replaced my bushing thinking it was gonna make my shifting smoother. Took it apart and everything was brand new inside. Replaced it anyway with an OEM bushing, added redline fluid and slightly overfilled it to factory setting settings. No difference all LOL. In the end I just needed to learn how to Rev match and that I couldnt treat my Tacoma like my Honda Civic.

 

For me the redline took awhile to make my gears shift smoother,

Anyone know which model's the seat and bushing fit? Mine is a 2007 xrunner, 6 speed. Amazon is saying this part doesn't fit your vehicle but, they've been wrong before.

I'm doing the urd ss kit, coupe mod, and gesr oil change all at once. I'm guessing I can pour in the gear oil in from the top where the shifter is instead of using one of those silly pumps. Anyone remember how much gear oil it takes?

 

Unless I'm mistaken, it doesn't look like your trans has a seat, only a bushing. I use THIS website to find all those small parts. You can put in your VIN and pull up all parts with diagrams specific to your vehicle.

You are right, you should be able to pour the gear oil in from the top. pumping sucks!

This is the first gen section so you may have better luck with how much gear oil you need by asking in the second gen section. Or it should be listed in the owners manual if you still have one.

EDIT: When I replaced the bushing at like 175k miles, it looked practically the same as the new one. Might not "need" replacing but it's only a few bucks so why not.

 

This thread is a year old but for posterity's and anyone else who searches this topic sake I'll add my two cents. Everything came apart easily for me and the locking collar went on fine. The issue I had was getting the new seat in. I found a video on youtube though that showed what to do. You just need to line up the notches on the seat with the two pins in the hole for the shifter lever and rock/swivel it in. I removed the seal under the old seat and didn't have any issues getting the locking collar back on. My original seat and socket still looked pretty nice but I replaced then anyway and the shifter tightened up a lot. It's better going into second and fourth now. The lever also doesn't bounce all over the place when I hit a bump.
