Simple Clutch Mod

I've been using one of those for years. It works good for brakes but not clutches, in my experience.

 

Good point. I have never bleed a clutch, why would this method not work as well for bleeding a clutch?

 

Because typically you are bleeding the brake calipers (slaves) and clutch masters. It is really easy to loose system pressure with a slight screw up on the clutch master side.

But seriously it works they really can't prove it was you that did damage unless it was after market parts. Even so it's not worth their time to prove so

 

I have thought about ditching this spring. Makes the pedal travel feel goofy and hard to judge. And I have driven LOTS of 5speeds over the years. This one is the worst of them. Between this and the throttle by wire, even after 30k miles I still screw up shifts sometimes.

 

Worked fine for me, or rather, is no worse than stock, in cold weather. Hardest part is somehow squeezing yourself under the dash. That sucked.

I did notice you're running an SR 4 Cyl, which could mean your clutch hydraulic circuit shares fluid with the brake master cylinder?

All I'm saying is the cold weather performance after removing the spring MAY be different for those of us that have the divorced system with the fluid resevoir on the fender. Its SUPER slow coming off the firewall the first few tries when it's colder than about -10C. I'm still thinking I'm gonna pull the damn thing....

 

Just an FYI, my V6 Sport does not have a separate clutch reservoir. It might only be the MT ORs and Pros?

 

It's still the same clutch, but it feels like the 'wandering' engagement point has finally settled down. It's predictable now. Before, the point in travel where the clutch engaged seemed to move around...possibly because of the spring. The clutch is easier to time with the throttle, if that makes sense.
I need to look under the hood again to see if I have a separate clutch fluid container. Also, I want to try and put the spring back in just so I'm sure I can do so. But it's still like 25 out right now, so working up the motivation to contort under that dash is hard.

 

I believe that is the case, with ATRAC on the OR and Pro, must not be able to share duty with the clutch.

 

This would be great news, hate this god damn clutch pedal feel. If no spring feels good in the cold you'll be my hero OP!

 

I am sorry to say, but this clutch spring mod is the first one that I undid.

It just didn't work for me, only made the clutch heavier, and didn't give me any more feel.

I'm not dissing @Dillypoop . It was just no bueno for me. I'm looking forward to an accumulator delete though.

For anyone trying to reinstall the spring, wrap two strong zipties on the arms and compress it as much as you can out of the Taco. Then push the clutch in the whole way. It will drop right in.

BTW, I agree that the clock spring is stupidly progressive. A linear spring should have been used there.

@tonered do you have any of the skills to work up a mod like you're talking about, accumulator delete or somesuch? there is so much room for improvement, but messing with hydraulics is like the worst idea ever for me. obviously.
