Simple Remote Starter

    Does anyone have a simple remote starter for their second gen? Was it difficult to install yourself? Does it still let you use your factory key fob to lock/unlock doors?

    I'm not interested in any of the features like alarms, LCD key fobs, lock/unlock, smartphone apps, or a 6 mile working radius. I'd just like to start my truck from the house on cold days (+/- 50 ft away).

    I'm interested in getting remote start for my rig too... Looks like from the comments on Amazon that you may require a bypass module?

    Only thing I have to wonder is that for a little over 50 bucks, is it worth it...

    I did find one on Amazon that used your existing fob but the issue with that is the factory fob will not unlock the doors with the truck running so if you remote started it, you would need to use the key. Something by Dei (Viper, hornet, avital, etc) like you posted should be fine, most likely need a bypass module to simulate chipped key. Its not difficult too install imho (i do a lot of stereo stuff though) but there are a lot of wires and connections to be made. How are you with connecting wires, testing for voltage, etc?

    ...which is why it makes me want to avoid this and just go get an upgraded stereo install done and have the tech throw in the remote start while I've already got them in the vehicle with the dash torn apart anyways.

    I like DIY projects but you can royally FUBAR your vehicle's electrical system by making a mistake.

    Buddy of mine put in an Alpine system into an '86 Bronco II I had eons ago... He forgot to ground the amp completely. My dad (retired after being a telecomm tech for 40 years) re-did the whole thing later which took about 3-4 hours. My alternator died not long after that. No way of knowing if the bad stereo install had anything to do with it, but it definitely crossed my mind. Probably my dad's fault since he wasn't a licensed stereo technician... :p

    When I wired mine I used the UNLOCK signal to activate the remote start. I press unlock 3x on the factory fob and it starts so I don't have to use the key to unlock it. I'm really not concerned with someone stealing my truck considering it will die if the break is pressed and the steering is still locked.

    But a wife costs far more than just buying a quality remote start plus install costs.

    It was an Excalibur add-on unit and yes, I believe 99% of all 2gens require a bypass which is no big deal. I believe there was 4 wires to connect to it and a harness that plugged right into the Excalibur unit. Very easy.
