Any info on which sensors would pick up a the "slight miss" ? Too many to chose from but would love to get some specific data around what's occurring when the slight miss does occur.

Mine isn't on any recall list (at this time) though

I have also noticed this in my 2016 AT. Do you guys think that an aftermarket tune like OV Tune would eliminate this?

It did for me on 87 with the tune though I run 93 tuned bc it’s even smoother. This engine likes premium

I don’t know how anyone can drive this truck without the OVtune.
It still chugs around at low speed/rpm but with 91 octane and a heavy foot it’s a blast to drive when tuned. I don’t even think about it anymore, I just put it in D and go

I’m with you! I rarely ever think about the shift points or chugging. It chugs when it makes sense but heavy foot and it’s always all smiles and shifting predictable. Is that too much to ask? A truck that moves when you touch the gas and shifts predictably based on load and throttle? I think not Toyota but thankful we have a strong community that helped get it fixed

I just don't want to pay for premium .Gas is brutal here man .Fuckin $5.40 a gallon roughly (1.35/L since we're metric) and that's regular .Premium is even more at 1.50-1.60/L

I bought a 2018 TRD Sport 6spd manual a few weeks ago. I have only run 87 E0 in it since new and I get the surge/miss as well (currently have approximately 1000mi). The truck I test drove before I bought the one I did (also a 6spd manual) had a really bad miss/stumble - much worse that the one I bought (I thought it had water in the gas). I have a station near me that carries Top Tier 91 octane E0 and will try some tanks of that. Not that I want to spend more money on gas, but at least it could confirm it may be due to an overly aggressive anti-knock profile. I really notice this in second gear and I hit the throttle around 2000rpms.

Having come from a 2003 4Runner with the 4.0L, I am missing that engine. The 3.5L engine is supposed to be more powerful, smoother and have better mileage, but I'm not seeing those benefits. I like the truck and am still breaking it in, so I haven't revved it very high yet or given it full throttle - That should come the next few weeks after I change the oil.

Since I have driven a few different 3rd gen manual Tacomas, I can tell you it is not just an automatic transmission programming issue. I certainly can see how this behavior could confuse an automatic and make it seem worse. Also, there is a much larger population of automatics out there, so it may seem like a bigger problem on those.

I am hoping enough people complain and Toyota comes up with an update.

I see this is an old thread but I have a new to me 2017 offroad, 6 spd manual, and it is replicating all of the above soft missing as described. The truck had about 17k on it when I bought it two months ago and now has about 21k. On a steep hill, or pulling out hard, it almost feels like it has water in the gas--LIKE it has water in the gas, I do not believe it does. I saw a recall bulletin on a prior post...is this a recall that might have been either missed or directed towards this issue?

    Welcome to TW!

Did you try going to the dealer and asking them to perform a healthcheck? You can say to them that your truck hesitates/surges under acceleration. You might be running the old ECU calibration.

The update might help you with it, or try using no ethanol gas. I use 91 no ethanol and it runs beautiful. I am also on the latest ECU update.

    Good luck!

I haven't done anything. I am certainly willing to. I sold an 07 tundra 4.7 4x4 offroad to buy this. they are apples and oranges, so I wouldn't say I am disappointed, YET, but this does not run like the venerable 4.7.

None that I am aware of. My truck stumbles very badly on 87. I run 93 to fix it, which it does. Try a tank or 2 of premium, it's cheaper now than what 87 was a month ago so cost is a non issue for all the people who complain about that.

Do you all, who have put many more miles on your 3.5s, notice a difference after the ECU reboot? And yes, I will try high test next.

I think I can confirm the 2020 models do this too. I thought torque converter until I started reading through this. Mine has 2500 or so miles on it and I’ve been running the 87 w/ ethanol so I’ll be experimenting with premium. I’ll also be mentioning it as a problem at its first checkup next month.

if gas price fixes it I suppose I’ll just be happy it’s fixed. I drive with ECT on all the time cause for some reason toyota programmed “normal” to be in 6th gear at 10 mph, which is the low rpm state this problem shows up in.

DC short bed off-road with automatic.

Mine is awful on low test. I pay for high test and it is not as bad. I have learned to live with the truck. I would trade it for a 2007 4.7 4runner in a heartbeat if I didn't lose $8k on the deal. Many other things about it are very good. Too bad. Long term purchase for me. I keep vehicles ten or more years as a rule.
