Snow chains??

Planning on taking a trip to see some friends in Oregon for the holidays, and i want to buy a set of chains that aren't too difficult to put on, are NOT wire rope constructed, and won't beat the stuffing outta my Tacoma. Any words of wisdom from experience are appreciated!

 

Practice installing them. Here is a good video about installing them and I would suggest never to drive over 30 mph. Usually 25 to 30. Also the tensioner is usually extra, but it is wise to use it. Unless you are required to use these things by law or you are on some serious ice or extremely deep snow a good set of snow and ice tires will do wonders without chains especially if you have 4X4 and even if not . If you are using a pick-up I suggest a couple hundred pounds of bags of sand or kitty litter over or behind the drive axle. It can also be used to get you out of a tough spot if needed. Have a safe trip.

I have chains and cables for my truck. The cables are easy to put on and ride alot better. If the weather is bad though. Nothing better than a good set of chains. Just practice alot. Putting them on in a storm or at night is hard.

Don't think your supposed to run them in front!

 

There isn 't enough room up front

 

I used to drive a 3 ton flat deck and it was horrible in snow when empty. I had chains but never actually installed them. I would just lay them out in front of the tires where I needed traction.

 

i run chains up front and back
otherwise the back tires, that have tons of traction, do a really awesome job of pushing your tractionless steering tires straight into a ditch, when you're dealing with ice

i don't run oversize tires

 

My tires are only 10mm wider than stock , so they only reduced the clearance to the UCA etc by 5mm or 1/4" , I don't see how chains would fit in there , probably why the manual says to only run chains in the rears

 

the manual also tells you what size tires to use...
