Kelowna winter. Hmmm.... sounds familiar compared to the Vernon weather lol

He should have tried that, it may have been the exact right amount of vibration to free up OP's frozen caliper.

You both are correct but torque isn't the only factor. The "power" is still going out the wheel without traction. Equal "power" to each wheel yes... but it doesn't mean something has to be frozen to have no ability to move. People need to stop trying to be right and just not know what happened in the situation that was involved.
Being able to break straps I would assume your stuck to something or frozen down. Frozen brakes alone wouldn't make the straps break but instead the wheels would not move and the truck would slide.

Most likely the truck isn't broken but it was just in an odd situation where the truck wasn't able to free itself.

with out pictures of this im going to assume he as high centered on snow which once again would mean he needed a damn shovel and much bigger tires :D

Amen brother! I've got some FJ steelies with some Duratracs for the rear of my Prerunner. The tires and some help from the LSD are the only thing that kept me going in 12"-15" of snow we recently had. Without 'em....the truck was a big paper-weight.

I've had the tires buried a third to a half of their diameter in wet heavy snow many times, which makes it tough to "get over the hump". Of course a shovel would likely have solved the problem...but spinning the tires just made an ice dam that was as tall as the snow was deep. This (I would guess) is why they were breaking straps - must've been shitty straps, too. I'm guessing, from the OP, that the truck was/ is functioning normally.

The solutions in order of importance:
    1. Learn from your mistakes.
    2. Get some good winter tires, and keep the stockers for summer (those mpgs, man) Two sets of wheels will save you money.
    3. Know when you are stuck. Then stop and think.
    4. Stop being lazy and pick up the shovel, it's the best recovery tool in the kit - actually I keep 2 in the truck.

Also, don't forget that this shit is fun. Sometimes we take ourselves, and our toys, too seriously.

Oh yeah, just because I feel the need to vent, anyone invoking physics in a thread better be prepared to discuss coefficients of starting and sliding friction between specific surfaces @tgear.shead

This one time, at band camp, I got my truck so high centered that it would smoke one tire that was barely touching the pavement, and broke a few cheap assed tow straps. Then Spring came and all was well with the world. :)

I dont know if you can see the smoke when I tried to warm up the tires but all 4 tires left black rubber from the heat in the snow.

Sometimes its not a matter of the tire having traction but maybe just not enough to move anything.
