*Solved* Electrical Problems

*solved* Hello Taco community! Hopefully yall can help me.

I bought a 2017 Tacoma and it had some mods done to it already. The part I want to ask about is the aftermarket head unit that was put in. The previous owner installed a Pioneer MVH-210ex and it was working fine. Reverse cam worked, audio was spot on and everything. Then I needed to wire in the parking brake to be able to reset the settings on the aftermarket head unit. I followed the instructions to the "T" and wired in a wire to the parking brake. Awesome, right? No. Although it did let me reset the head unit, now I am having a ton of electrical problems.

-Vent mode controls do not work, only works in defrost mode
-Windows do not go up or down now
-Tire monitor screen on gauge cluster
-Tire pressure low indicator is illuminated
-Seat belt sensor does not indicate that I dont have a seatbelt on
-Rear facing camera doesnt work
-The green A/C indicator lights do not work
-Air bag light on Gauge cluster is red and constant.

I tried disconnecting the wire I put in and there is no change. Please Help haha

There's a fuse u popped by the drivers foot panel area. It's a 7.5a brown fuse. I forget the name, ECU something or other maybe?

 

Is it possible that the reason there was nothing wired to the parking brake was this very thing? I am going to ask a couple questions and I mean no disrespect or condescension so please don't take it that way. Just want to make sure we have the whole picture.

Did you disconnect the battery when before you touched anything behind the dash?
Did you make sure that everything was securely seated/plugged back in after removing the head unit in case anything may have bumped loose (even if you didn't unplugged it at all)
Did you try disconnecting the battery, letting it sit 30 minutes and then reconnecting?

Just want to see if we can help you trouble shoot, but need some additional details. Again, I mean no disrespect, I know these are "dumb" questions but we all make mistakes from time to time.

Check fuses. On my 07, I wired in a mini momentary switch for the head unit instead of tapping into the parking brake.

 

There are some very sharp folks here and it's likely that someone will be able to help you sort this out. Mr. Rick has some good suggestions and I can only add a couple of thoughts.

Did the reverse sense wire on the aftermarket head unit want a positive or negative input? Does the parking brake switch complete a power circuit or a ground circuit? One possibility is that even though you think that you followed the instructions you wired that in backwards. If you haven't, it might make sense to do that and see if it fixes anything.

If you got the OEM head unit, it might also make sense to reinstall it and see if that changes anything.

The worst case scenario that I can think of is that you damaged the body ECU. The best case is that by taking taking the reverse sense wire out of play, you just have to replace some fuses.

The parking brake lead is just to ground. Could’ve wired that to any ground and still had it work. Sounds like you shorted something when you tapped the parking brake. Remove the tap. Check fuses and start again

 

You all are very kind and helpful! I like what you said " we all make mistakes from time to time". No disrespect taken.

1- I did not disconnect the battery, I know rookie mistake haha
2- I did make sure that everything was reconnected, I even looked behind the dash and pushed all connections together
3- I have not disconnected the battery to see if it resets anything, but I will.

 

WELL I OFFICIALLY LOVE THE TACOMA FORUMS! YALL FIXED MY PROBLEM! It ended up a blown fuse! The ECU_IG No. 2 fuse to be exact.

I wanted to say thank you very much for the speedy and respectful responses! I did not have the same luck on the Harley Davidson Forums for silly questions. Although I dont respond to bullying and it doesnt hurt my feelings on the HD forums when I had a weird question I would always have to sift through the BS responses to try to fix my issue. But you guys were awesome, thank you very much!

Glad it was the easiest and least expensive solution. If nothing else, you now know to disconnect the battery when doing anything electrical.

 

Yeah one thing I have learned on these newer vehicles, disconnect the battery for EVERYTHING haha. you are basically driving a computer and it takes nothing to short something out or pop a fuse and you would never even know it. Glad you were able to get it fixed. Welcome to the forums, lots of knowledge here... you will still have your fair share of BS and Asshole-ish responses to things but for the most part, people seem to be pretty helpful and its unlikely you are going to do something to your truck that at least one of the many members on here hasn't done already and asked for help or posted a solution for.
