I'm currently driving a 2009 SR5 DCLB that I bought new. I'm at 199,500 miles. I might finally upgrade. I hate to let the old one go because of sentimental reasons, but I've certainly got my money's worth.

I do zero off-roading. Some snowy road driving. Some gravel/dirt state forest roads. I've not had issues with my 09 with all season tires for what I do. I have not towed anything ever.

I like the looks of the TRD OR wheels. The stock tires on the SR5 look like they need to be replaced immediately. Other than that I'm not sure I would realize the upgrades the TRD offroad has to offer. I'm not worried about resale value because I'll keep it hopefully for 200k.

The TRD OR DCLB seem to always be loaded with features I don't want pushing them up towards $50+k. There are some SR5's in the low $40k's. I could get new tires, remove the air dam, and put on a non fabric skid plate and be in good shape.

I'm a cheapskate but I can afford either truck. I just can't decide if I'll regret cheaping out on the SR5.

    What should I do?

Expand your search and find an Off Road in the low to mid $40’s. Not sure what options you’re after in the OR. Here’s a LB for $43,300

If you really want the trd offroad, I'm sure there is a base one out there without the upgraded or premium package if you don't want any of those features.

Do you want to tow? Integrated brake controller is in a big package of other stuff. Do you want power seats? Again - a big package of other stuff. I decided on an OR.

I do not plan to tow and I do not require power seats. I would like heated seats. That one linked in post #2 is exactly what I want (in black)

After two Offroad 3rd gens I went with an SR5 4th gen. I never offroad, never used the locker, etc. Now, when I bought mine there was few OR's on the lot so that is some of my decision. I have the upgrade package with heated seats, steering wheel, JBL audio, etc so it honestly has everything I need. After the first snow I drove through I did replace the tires, so you're correct on that.

I tried dealing with that guy but he seemed so evasive about specifics, and he refused to talk on the phone. Then he just went silent. It threw up a lot of red flags. Did you get any odd vibes? At the time, the new Tacomas were more in demand and still selling quickly.

They are around for sure in that price range . As long as your not looking for a sunroof, leather ,I force max or some of the the higher end packages . My third Gen is the standard off road and honestly have not missed any of the gadgets my buddy has with his higher end off road

No, but most of the deal was done by text and email. Then talked to the dealership a few times for paperwork and date/time for taking delivery. I will admit it was an unusual experience, it was far easier than dealing with a traditional salesman.

There should be plenty of of TRD Offroad wheel/tires available near you. Get the SR5 that you want and pickup the wheels that you want.

Fyi, those 17” Off-road wheels you like are listed on Facebook marketplace in my area every time I look. The generally run $400-600 without tires.

Therefore you can always buy a SR5 then immediately upgrade the wheels and tires to your preferences.

I had the same question when I bought mine. Really, like you, only use the 4x4 when its snowy or occasional fire road, so didn't need much of what the OR's offered. I do tow however, so the integrated brake controller was a must have (Toyota made it a bit difficult to retrofit an aftermarket one to the 4th gens per some of the posts I read here and elsewhere). I also wanted the heated steering wheel and the JBL sound system (in hindsight, the JBL system isn't awesome so I could have passed on that). Got an SR5 with the cold weather package which had everything I wanted, upgraded the wheels / tires off FB marketplace for under $600, and eventually will add a real skid plate. At the time back in late April, the SR5 saved me thousands vs an OR. I haven't been keeping up with prices and year end discounts, etc, so if you could get an OR in the low 40's now, I'd jump on that (unless you can get an SR5 in the upper 30's now too), but my choice at the time got me everything I needed / wanted, and was considerably less expensive than the OR then.

Dealers are overloaded with SR5 trims so there’s competition and motivation to deal. As long as you’re ok long-term with the basic digital gauge cluster and smaller screen, then a 4x4 SR5 with upgrade package, cash on the hood, and proper wheels is all the truck you’ll ever need for the next 200k miles.
