Starter got wet

went and did some puddle jumping this last weekend and after going into a puddle that may have been a little too deep driveing a little to fast the truck stalled out. when i went to restart all i got was a click from the starter. we pulled the truck out and checked the intake first. the filter was a little wet but the intake pipe was still dry. still just a click from the starter though, hooked up jumper cables but still nothing. we had tow the truck back to the cabin and just let it sit to dry out. the next moring it started up.

my question is has this happened to anyone else? is it just a matter of time before my starter goes out completely? is ther a way to prevent this in the future? why is it so hard to find a double cab V6 with a manual transmition?(what i wouldnt have given to be able to roll start)

 

The starter was probably soaked and shorting out causing the click. My starter was randomly clicking when I went to start the truck and then I did a few water crossings and it got worse Then Thursday it was real bad. I had to beat on the starter and keep trying for like 20 minutes to get it to start. So Saturday i changed the conatacts out and its been fine.
It could be good for a long time or die tommorow. If you havnt had a problem in the last few days and next few days to come your probably in the clear.

 

The starter's solenoid is your problem. Replace the solenoid or rebuild it.

 

have never had a problem before and it has been working ever since it dried out. the real question is will it do this everytime it gets swamped? even if i replace the started will it do the same thing when it gets wet?

 

Possibly. My starter had 2 rubber vents that help keep the water out, check to see if they are still in place.

If you were puddle jumping and not sumerging it it in deep water than make sure you have a splash guard between the innerfender well and the frame...that will keep a lot of the spray away from the starter.

You also have a 2nd Gen so Im not 100%
