I have a 2010 and about 2 or 3 weeks ago my truck simply wouldn't start, I turn the key and nothing, as if the battery was completely dead. So I take out my voltmeter and check and the battery was full power. When I get back in my truck it starts fine, so I thought nothing of it. Couple nights ago it did the same thing. I popped my hood to take a look and all of a sudden the dash lights came on (I left the keys in) and the truck started no problem. My question is simply has ANYONE else had this same problem? And if so, did you find what was going on? Truck is under warranty so I'm going to take it in once I get a chance. If anybody has insite on this I would greatly appreciate it.

    Check Build Thread!!
sounds like a loose connection maybe? check your battery connections to make sure they are tight? The ground near it. fuses. I'm just shooting in the dark. Intermittent problems are usually wiring though.

I was thinking the same thing. I checked and everything seemed secured, but that's the best possible answer I could come up with. Thanks

Does it even crank or does it make the typical rapid "clicking" of a dead battery?

If it cranks but wont start, I'm thinking there's an issue with your immobilizer. All our anti-theft components are electronic now, and as we all know very well, electronics tend to go bad sometimes for no good reason.

Oh, and are you manual or auto?

It's auto, but doesn't even crank or make any noise. Truck just did it again today so I'm back to searching connections.

Intermittent electrical problems are the hardest to diagnose and replicate, but they usually go hand in hand with connections, fuses, grounds, and the occasional short.

    Still under warranty??

yup im betting on a loose electrical connection. either the grounding cable where it connects to frame or maybe a connection inside the ignition. the only thign with the connection inside the ignition is that it would give you issues while driving possibly. im not an electrical guy but try to test every major connection and wire with voltmeter. then when it does it again you can retest everythign and see if you can find anything that isnt indicating.

Good place to start (no pun intended). :D

How about the connections to the starter itself? Maybe got ripped out or damaged under the truck somehow? I'm really not sure where they are on these trucks (just got mine a few weeks ago), but I'd say it's worth investigating.

Also, have you had your battery/charging system load tested?

The fastest way to tell I your truck is gonna act up before you even put the key in is........

Leave the dome light set to turn on when door opens. And if it doesn't work then nothing is working.
I'd say the issue is somewhere near the battery and is a main connection point for everything because absolutely nothin works when it acts up. If you had lights and no starter or lights and no whatever then it would be that specific part. Hope this helps

Check connections at battery and starter. If still no love, try removing small trigger wire from starter, install jumper wire on trigger terminal, and short that to battery positive. This should crank the truck if the starter, battery, and main cables are good. BE CAREFUL, this will crank the truck no matter what, even in gear.

Could also try putting the gear lever in neutral and trying to crank it. Kinda sounds like a neutral safety switch problem.

UPDATE: Finally took my truck in to the dealer and they said the int. starting problem was due to a faulty battery. Looked like there was some leakage, guess that solves it even though I haven't had an issue for quite some time now.

I got a new battery under warranty the other day too. It was leaking around the terminals also.

How old was yours? Mines is a 2010. Did you ever experience starting problems also or just a leaky battery? Mines bugged me for about a week or two.

Mine is a 2010 too. I had random intermittent starting issues that started in may. The issues had actually disappeared. I took it to the dealer for some things and complained about intermittent hesitant start and that the truck sputtered to a start and exhaust smelled like straight fuel and had a vibe for about a minute after starting. And showed em my battery and mentioned it may or may not be problem. Told em that regardless I've never had any I my tacomas have battery corrosion and leakage on top of battery. They replaced it due to leaks around terminals.

From what I have heard, today's batteries just don't last as long as they used to. I think that it has more to do with Quality Control than anything else. Things are not made as well these days as they used to be.
