    I have a 2007 4wd double cab with 150k.
With the truck stopped I can only turn the steering wheel about 1 turn in each direction before getting hard resistance that i have to force it and to go further and theres a clunk noise or I crawl a bit forward or backward and the steering becomes free again.

Doesn't happen while driving just when I turn the wheel while stopped like in a parking lot.

I replaced the intermediate steering shaft last year and the wheel bearings last year.

I was wondering about the CV joint or maybe something with the steering rack ?

Are you lifted and running aftermarket UCA's? Or are you all stock?

I have the same issue, but mine is due to my lift and high caster settings so mine is normal.

5100 bilstein set to center slot if I remember right 1.5"-2" in the front with stock control arms.

But I installed the shocks last year and never had this issue.

    Pump or rack.
    Try changing fluid first.
Also some pumps had a filter that can clog up

Well I revived this thread because I’m having the same issue. Just replaced the intermediate shaft (when i jack the truck up to bleed the power steering there is no binding).

I did install a new pump and new rack last year too and I’m back to having the binding again. About to replace the pump and install a filter and new reservoir this time around. Just wondering if there is anything else that could be causing it.

A bit of clarification may be in order here. When one says that they replaced the intermediate shaft but still have a problem, it would be helpful to indicate which shaft was replaced, upper or lower?

The upper shaft is famous for clunks, noise and looseness.

The lower shaft likes to bind and even seize as the needles in the ujoint rust.

I replaced the lower shaft that connects to the rack.

I’ll check the upper shaft but when the truck has the wheels off the ground there is no issue to turn lock to lock. Leads me to believe it’s either the rack or pump but I’ll check it regardless.

2007 Base cab, 4wd Taco, 2.7, 5 speed. It's my grandad's truck and he wants me to "get on them internets on that computer of yours and order me a BOOSHING (bushing) for the intermediate steering shaft on the firewall." I looked on ebay and general google blast but can't find the bushing. If anyone has a part number for this bushing I'd appreciate it!

I'll have to show him and see what he says, this is a good lead. He somehow has NO BUSHING in there right now. He combined three trucks (1 totaled, 1 frame replaced, 1 rusted out frame with good body) into one and during his diligent swap of parts it was taken out and then the other cabs scrapped and now he has no bushing at all, which may have led to the failure of this intermediate shaft.

Thanks Tacoma16 for the quick reply, this may help tremendously.
