Stock Air Box Mod?

Ok so this kit right here is designed for the Tundra, and I had one on my Tundra and noticed pretty decent gains. It creates a second tube into the fender to draw in the air from the fender just like the stock tube does. My questions are:

1. Do you guys think it would fit the airbox on the Tacoma?

2. Do you think it would be worth it?

What that doesn't factor in is noise. I've been under a lot of hoods for a lot of different makes, and the one thing I always notice is the bizarre array of air snorkels. There are cars out there that put their snorkels in stupid spots to keep noise down, and there are cars that put extra snorkels facing the passenger cabin to make more vroom-vroom noises and make you think the car is totally sporty.

So I can believe there would be a power bump to be had by shoving more air into the stock airbox. Would it be huge? Probably not.

 

I had it on my Tundra and did get roughly a 1.5 mpg bump hand calculated. I know it won't pull in more air than what the engine can hold, but I compare it to sucking air through two straws instead of one. Less restrictive airflow would mean less work the engine has to do to draw in that air. Too bad I don't have a dyno anywhere near me. The bottom part of the box is ~$175 so if it ended up being a bad idea I could just go back to the stock airbox and chalk it up to a bought lesson and still be at a price that is way less than an aftermarket intake.

 

Deckplate mod, never heard of it on the third gens though

 

Looks similar. The only difference I see is that the deckplate mod will pull air from the engine bay while the one I posted pulls air from the fender.

True, but then you would defeat the purpose of drawing in more air from the fender. Instead you would be mixing warm air with the lower temp air and decreasing efficiency for sure.

 

But then again I may be wrong. If I am please correct me. I've been a diesel guy all my life. This is my first gas truck.

 

The explanation of the dyno plot says it all:

I'm not familiar with Toyota ECU calibration (e.g., MAF vs SD), so my comments are generalized...

If you look at the boost curves on the dyno plot, you can see that the onset is significantly quicker in the two later runs; additionally, the AFR is leaner with those runs (which is likely attributed to the additional boost). That makes a significant torque bump in lower RPMs. Later in the RPM range (where boost pressure is similar), the difference is minimal.

Assuming that #1 vs #2 difference was simply engine warming up, I wouldn't take too much stock in that difference (honestly, I view #1 as "noise" after reading the description). Let's only focus on #2 vs #3, where they talk about open vs closed. Limiting to the open/closed plots (#2/3), the difference is minimal between them.

Peak values don't mean as much as area under the curve. If you look at #2/3 plots, you'll see that they're very similar. Because it's a Dynojet with low smoothing (2), the plots are a bit wavy.

Without F/I being introduced, I fail to see this being that helpful.

 

Due to the placement of the air box(in first gen, idk about 3rd gen) the temp is not gonna be noticeably higher

 

I have noticed that these engine bays hold heat a lot more than my Duramax and my Cummins did.

 

Maybe, I have nothing to compare it to, this is my first truck

 

If this is the same G-Tek Fab that is on TW, we could just ask him for his opinion if it would work on a Tacoma.

OK so I spoke to @G Tek Fab today, and sent him some pictures of my intake. He is going to look into building a prototype kit. Here's hoping it will help out!

 

Didn't the deck plate mod help the 4.0 at least that's what I read ?? Wonder if throttle response and sound obviously would be better with it done on the 3.5

 

I'd love to try it. I'll be the first to volunteer to be the guinea pig on it if he is willing to toss out a few on a test trial. It did wonders for my Tundra, so one could only assume that it would make a difference with the Tacoma.

 

Latest and greatest: I am having a prototype sent out to me to install and test. Once it gets installed, I will report back. I don't think I will post the install process here until we know if it is effective at helping to wake up the 3.5L, and he decides whether to make a production run or not.

 

Now I wanna do this just to see lol

 

Bad idea. Doesn't help only increases risk that something will get in there that shouldn't be in there.
