Just bought a 2001 Tacoma 4x4 TRD no to long ago. Changing out the front shocks and throwing some Bilstein 5100s on. I got the truck with a Rancho shocks. (Cant tell if they are aftermarket springs or not) Just wondering what the length of stocks springs is suppose to be?

Jeez, not sure when they are new. Whatever you have now is sagging I'll bet. If the top few coils are really close together, you likely still have the original stock progressive springs, and the 5100s will work with them no problem.

You can also take a pic of the top of the springs and we should be able to tell.

You could also call Wheeler's Offroad and ask (or PM Yotadan, he's a TW member). They have the stock stuff new and should be able to tell you the OEM spec on height.

My problem is that I took the 5100s to a shop to get the springs on since I don't have a compressor and even on the lowest setting 0'' the springs cant be compressed enough to start the nut after the top plate.

Wow, that's very odd. Any commercial wall-mount spring compressor should be able to compress any coil on any Tacoma. Or was someone trying to use dinky McPherson strut compressors? Might be "mechanic" error.

Can you get us a picture of the coils? Also get us a measurement from the center of your front hub to the bottom edge of you fender flare.

Also, should double check that they didn't try to put the spring perches on upside down, but that would not prevent them from installing the lowest setting with stock coils.

The free height of uninstalled springs really isn't going to tell you much. Depending on the rate and wire diameter a spring could actually be shorter than stock free standing but lift the truck once installed. This was the case when I took out my 250k mile stockers and replaced them with Moog brand "off road" spec replacement springs. They had a thicker wire diameter and I presume a higher spring rate. Free standing they were about 1.5" shorter than the stock springs I took out but they actually raised the front of the truck about 3/4" once installed with fresh Bilstein HD's.
