    I looked at some 2015 2nd gen Tacomas, and I'm totally mind blown.

    2015 TRD sport with 40,000 km - $39,000 Canadian dollars. :eek: (I'm in Canada)

    I think my 2015 was less than $39,000 new.

    Even though Tacos have relatively poor fuel economy for a modern car, I think the unreal resale value makes the overall cost of ownership comparable to that of any economical car.

    Best purchase I ever made.

    AMEN!! I have been on the search for a 2015 Long Bed to upgrade from my 2007 and found the same thing.

    I too was wondering why I could purchase a 2017 for the same price as a 2015. Must be gold in there that we don't see!!!

    Paid $45k - lot of add-ons and extras. Blue book is $30k, still owe $12k

    Wouldn't change a thing....

    I got 19,200 for my one owner 2008 trd sport this past November when I traded it in. It did only have 63k miles on it but had a few dents and stuff. They washed it, turned around and sold it for 22,400 in 4 days.

    Resale value on good condition 1st and 2nd gen Taco's really is rather amazing. I had been looking for a used Taco off and on for about a year. Common to find a 1st gen with 110k - 130k miles for roughly US $15k and they'd sell immediately. 2nd gens with 100k miles would sell for roughly US $20k+.

    Three months ago I found CPO 2012 Access Cab, 4x4 OR, tow package, etc. with only 2800 miles on the odo (yes 2800, not a typo) for $26k with 100k extended warranty, pre-paid maint up to 20k miles. The truck was is Tacoma WA and I currently live in Santa Barbara, Ca. Called the dealer, put down a deposit over the phone and was on a plane a few days later! I have a residence in Oregon, so I was able to register it in Oregon, thus avoiding either California or Washington state sales tax! Only paid $200 for two years of registration.

    I'll either drive the thing until it dies, or if I do need to ever trade it in, I'll have plenty of 'equity'!

    Cheers,
    DJM

    I've been in the same boat. I currently have a 2006 AC, Prerunner OR with 168k miles (only paid $10k for it 1.5 years ago, bought it super clean with incredible service records). I love everything about it but I want 4wd (not need, want). Found a 2013 AC, 4wd OR with 65K miles for $19k. Which I think is a hell of a deal. Similar trucks seem to be going for $23-$24k around here. It need some attention interior & exterior wise but has been serviced at the selling dealer every 5k miles. So great service history but a well used truck, nothing major beyond a dirty interior, a big dent in the bed side and buff-able scratches all over it (and cheap tires that won't balance). BUT the dealer only wants to give me $7500 for my trade in. Obviously the owner with have more emotional involvement and for the dealer it's just business. I get that but I'm going to see what Carmax will give me.

    What does resale value have to do with costs of ownership?

    An economy car would cost half as much as a Taco so I don't agree.

    Resale value only matters if/when you sell.

    My question is are they actually getting anywhere close to $39K for that truck or is just this some inflated sticker price?

    When I bought my truck it was new for the reason as OP mentioned - used sticker prices were insane on some trucks. There are deals out there - my brother in law bought a 2011 DCSB Sport from a reputable dealer in Edmonton for $27K CDN with under 50,000 kms on it about 3 years ago. The truck was clean with no accidents.

    If my first statement is correct, that begs the question - what kind of a moron would buy it when they can get something new (Turd Gen nonwithstanding for the same price.

    I recently picked up this truck from Toyota Carlsbad. It was my third vehicle purchase from them in the last 3 years. They gave me what seemed to be a hell of a deal. They sold me an 07' Access Cab w/90k miles. It was a single owner truck bought and driven locally and all the services were performed at either Toyota Carlsbad or Toyota Escondido which are within 15 driving minutes. This truck has everything TRD O/R upgraded. Locker, leather, paint, bilsteins, electrical outlet, tow package (universal plug wiring too)... literally everything but the side TRD stickers, lol. $16k... similar tricks out here go for $20k.

    If you want to know what something is really worth, you have two calls to make.

    One to your insurance agent, to find out what % they total a vehicle at, and what that payout would be. Do the math and that's the value to them.

    The other is to a conservative bank/CU, and find out the loan value. Since they want equity collateral for the loan, that's what it's really worth.

    Neither of those numbers will be close to a 'trade in' number or a lot retail number.

    No, you can't typically buy for the numbers referenced above. But everything you pay over those are lost dollars to you.......... day 1.

    No you're smart. Now that I am retired and have 20/20 hindsight there are two things I would change if I had it to do over:

    1. Never buy a new car--one of the quickest ways there is to lose money, especially if financed;
    2. Save/invest more, once you are basically settled in pay off your primary residence--between a couple pension plans and SS, and owning everything outright, we are comfortable but having more would be nice;
    Also, you will live longer than you think you will when you're 35...

    In the end anything is "worth" whatever serious buyers are willing to pay, within a time frame that fits in with your desire to sell. Some neighbors had their house on the market at $457k for over six months because of a job relocation, with very little action. Dropped it to $440k and sold it in two weeks...

    Us 30 year olds will be lucky if SS is still around when we retire, and what is a pension?!?
