I had a tailgate that wouldn't lower because the latch was jammed. Some posted this same problem on earlier threads but no solution was given so I thought I would post what worked for me. The gate was jammed on the right side but the left side would release. I took a small 2x4 and place it along the top inside part of the tailgate by the stuck latch and gave it a moderate whack with a 3 lb hammer. The gate released, no damage was done.

With the gate now in the down position I found a small pebble in between the lower portion of the plastic tailgate lining and the metal portion of the tailgate. Apparently the plastic lining screws had loosened enough to allow this pebble to wedge in there. When the tailgate was lifted into the closed position this pebble jammed the gate upward placing pressure onto the latch mechinism. The latch just couldn't release.

I am now adding an inspection of the tailgate lining screws to my maintenance practices to avoid this in the future. It doesn't seem to be a common problem but this solution may help someone if they have a similar issue.

You could also take the screws out from the platic lining and you have more area to work with this happened to me but my brother rear end me but my tail gate still open but got a new tail gate and when I was puting all the parts from my old to my new one I broke a plastic clip where the latch was and had to weld a washer on the little bar behind the latch and fixed it

A slew of pricey stuff my wife hates me for.
I’ve taken the screws out and the plastic cover. Still can’t get the drivers side latch to release.

I recently moved a load of 3/4” crushed stone and I’m certain I’ve got some debris in the mechanism.

I’ve saturated the mechanism with lube hoping to dislodge the obstruction. My next attempt will be hit it with compressed air.
