Do the screws show through the underside of the bed? If so, they could be slotted so that a screwdriver could be used to turn them out...

I just went out to look, it could be possible, there is a lot of the screw coming out the underside, enough that two thin nuts could be locked together to at least un-torque the screws.

You could always fabricate two triangle wedges, push them between your tailgate and your topper. You only need about 1/4" to 1/2" open. Then you need to fabricate a 1/4" bar with the proper curve to release one of your tonneau locks. This is what many tow truck drivers will do on a car door. Our kit has soft plastic/rubbery triangle wedges, you will want to make sure to used something that won't scratch or damage your weatherstripping.

Is there a possible way to take off the tailgate handle? If you can get it off maybe getting a magnet at the end of something long enough to grab one or two of the rods to pull the tailgate opened? I'm just thinking out loud here.

The tailgate handle is fixed on from inside the tailgate

Wow, what a dilemma. As impatient as I am, I would try to pry a corner up with a crow bar and see if you have enough room to unlock it manually or even just break the lock with enough pressure.

A complete new tonneau is under $300. I'm sure you don't want to trash it, but if you can't find a non-destructive entry point, this is probably the least expensive way into the bed.

Well at least he doesn't have to worry about someone stealing his tailgate or tonneau cover. It's an anti-theft device in itself.

I would cut the stiching on the cover and then take the top to a vinyl guy to stich it back together. Better yet take it to him and see if he could do it.

Pick up the phone and call the maker of your cover and then call pop and lock to see what they have to say. Maybe they will have some ideas.

mkay gentlemen, i fixed it!. what i did was i lifted my tonneau cover from the rear just enough and reached in and unlocked my trifold tonneau cover from the back. I was right, the rod that unlocks the tailgate when you pull the handle came off on one side as illustrated by the pic i attached, i taped it down as a temporary fix with gorilla tape. Im gonna order the other missing tab or go to a toyota dealership and see if they have it. thank you for the replies useful, or just to be funny or bored, they somehow helped.
