I recently got a Lund hard fold cover for the bed and was thinking of a lock for the tailgate.

Is pop&lock still about the only company making a locking tailgate handle?

I've heard in the past that P&L where having some problems where the tailgate wouldn't unlock or the mechanism inside the locking handle breaks out.

Do they got better at this? I don't want to have to break the tonneau or do something else to have to open the tailgate.

They are basically the only company making a locking handle for Tacoma right?

I've had mine for about 8 months, never had an issue. I'm always sure to be careful and gentle using the handle.

My P&L has been OK for six years and counting. Spray the handle mechanism generously with white lithium grease when you install it (when the tailgate inner panel is still open). Also lubricate the lock cylinder with PTFE dry lube every year.

I've had my power version for the tailgate and my canopy for 3.5 years, just recently the tailgate one stopped locking. Pulled open the tailgate, gave the sliding part a quick clean and grease, good to go for another 3 years.

Does the Lund cover use a pullstring going across to unlatch? Most covers with that latch design can be opened with a coat hanger inserted between the tailgate and the cover.

Thank you for the replies, so it looks like with proper care and some grease, the lock can be reliable for a long time.

I'm thinking of going with the one that uses your own key

    no pullstring, uses latches.

The electric lock has been more reliable than the handle lock.

You talking about the electric + key lock, or just the electric + stock handle?

wait can you even do electric + stock handle?

Mines connected to the driver door, so its used every time I lock or unlock. It can be wired into the passenger side door so it's only used when unlocking passenger doors.
