Terrible MPG

Not at 30k unless it's got a K&N that's been over oiled.

I've had vehicles go over 100k and never had to clean the MAF.
More damage is done by people attempting to clean the MAF and TB than solved.

 

Check it with the second full tank I guarentee he was watching the gauge and when it barley hit Full he shut it off

How long did it stay on "F" when you bought the truck? I'm betting about 10 miles.

 

Well, I'd beg to differ. Although I have cars that have lived 100k+ without a cleaning. On my taco, I have had a 12.5 mpg truck at 10k and cleaned it will bring it back to 15+. For $0.20 worth of cleaner it's worth a shot. I won't ever change a filter on my taco without cleaning the MAF.

 

And I've got 100k on mine and still get 24.

OP does not likely have a problem other than he didn't start with a full tank and he jumped the gun.

 

When I picked up the truck. It was at 1/4 of a tank. I said the salesman it wasn't full. He said ok went and filled it up and came back. 10min not even.

 

i averaged 11-13mpg's on a good day until my recent cleaning of the TB. now im up to at least 14 and was excited to make at least 250 miles for the first time in a long time before the light came on . thats like super gas saver hybrid status for me

 

You're also not exactly running stock... and don't you have an oiled air filter?

My point was that a lot of people recommend regular or preventative cleaning of the MAF and TB when it is not needed for 90% of vehicles.
If it were an issue, it would be in the maintenance schedule.

How many threads do we see where someone posts about problems, and these problems began right after they cleaned their MAF or TB? Frequently.
Yes, it can be done, it's not hard, but it is also something that is easy for someone to screw up and overlook replacing one of the hoses, or misroute them, or damage a fitting....
The MAF in particular SHOULD always be clean if the air filter is maintained.
The TB, I can see wiping down the butterfly when the cover is off to change the plugs. 2.7 you have to expose the butterfly to change the plugs.

 

By "jumped the gun" I meant you jumped to the assumption that you are getting poor mileage when you haven't even run a full tank through it yet.
You don't know, the dealer may have just dumped 10 gallons in. That would have taken it from 1/4 to "F", but would still be a few gallons low.

 

Ahh I see. I apologize. I started a Fuelly account and i'm going to fill up tomorrow and give it a shot. I'm also calling the dealership just to get a clarification on what they did infact service.

umm no the higher octane is more resistant to burning youre not getting better mpg from it. now if you said you were seeing a gain from a pure gas without ethanol then yeah..

Fuelly has an app, but it's just a browser hotlink, and when you tap the input field, there's no decimal on the default Android keypad, so you're better off just using text messages.

yea something is wrong. i get 12mpg in my K1500 Silverado extended cab short bed. you dont want to know what kind of mpg i get in my first gen 4x4 you will be jelly

 

They will tell you they filled it up like they told you when you left haha. Dont waste your time or theirs run a few tanks of gas from the same station and keep the same driving style.

 

It has a slightly higher flashpoint so it resists preignition.
Once the flame front begins, or once the spark hits, it is no harder to burn than regular.

But the V6 can benefit from premium. It was designed to run on premium, but the knock sensor pulls it back to allow for lower grades.
The 2.7 will not advance timing or lean the mixture beyond the trims that come into play under a no-knock situation with 87.

So no benefit on 2.7, possibly a slight benefit on 4.0. but not likely enough to make up the cost difference. Same for the extra $0.20 that a non-ethanol fuel will cost.

 

He was talking about the plugs and other maintenance items that should have been done at 30,000 before he bought the truck.

 

full armor, heavier then average tires, enough recovery gear and tools to outfit several trucks, camping gear etc. etc. that usually stays inside the truck 90% of the time makes one loaded taco..
i run exclusively stock air filters, i will never install an oiled type air filter. my MAF was clean so i didn't touch it but the butterfly was really dirty but take into consideration on how often i hit dirt.

i know my mpg's are low and i know why. and it's perfectly acceptable for the way i have my tacoma built.
