I have read about this a ton. I am getting my front windows tinted to match the rears tomorrow so I’m trying to understand the 2 schools of thought..

    1. Measure the back windows, get a film that matches and put it on the front, you’re good.

    2. Any glass that looks clear has some tint to it. Say the front un-tinted windows meter at 77%. So .35 X 77 = 26.95. That would make 35% tint match the back if the back is 27%.

Any experts know which is actually true? The lady at the tint shop said she has done Tacomas at 28% and it looks good, but I don’t know. I want it to look exactly like the back.

Every vehicle I've had tinted to match the rear windows 20% matched perfectly, have to see if I can find pics my camry and Tacoma were all non tinted windows.

No "tint expert", but 18-20% on your fronts will get you about as close a match to the back as you can get.

Well damn in FL the darkest they’ll go is 28%. I guess I could find a place that would go below the legal limit but I don’t know if it’s worth it.

I live in Ohio and Ohio legal is 50% IMO not even worth spending the money to do so I always go darker my camry and Tacoma are both 20% fronts and 5% rear and back.

You also have to factor in the fact the front windows will appear lighter than the back because of the light coming through the windshield. So if you want them to “match” you would need them slightly darker than the rear.

As far as legality, some places are stricter than others on window tint laws. I’m sure you can easily find a place that will do it for cash. I’ve always had dark windows. To compensate I have always rolled down all windows during any traffic stop for the safety of the police officers involved. That way everyone and everything in my vehicle is clearly visible.

If you were to get pulled over, roll your windows down. Not saying that'd get you out of a ticket for illegal tint. But it could lower your chances,
by being respectful of what a officer does, and doesn't know about you.

I did 20% on all my glass. it looks good and I can see. If i were you I would find a place the would go below 28%

the guy kind of gave me a hard time to go below the legal limit. when I picked up my truck they were working on a police car So I told him he better make sure there tint was legal

I honestly couldn’t care less about that law, the lady just told me the tint shop has to follow it.

I know around here the legal limit is 35% but every other car is tinted more than 35%

Yeah it's the same here in TX. You just tell them you're paying cash and don't need a receipt.

Well the shop won’t go darker than 28%, I am just trying to figure out if I need to go darker to get a good match.

Edit: I may try the cash thing, or do a waiver or something if darker is needed to match.

Yes you do. 18-20% is what you need to match the factory back.

I matched the back by %. The shop said the stock rear was about 30% (what they said after measuring). They matched it by percentage and I like it. If I did it again I’d go 20% though cause as someone said the fronts look lighter because of the windshield.

Haha ok I will have to get it right, I don’t think I’ll do 28% regardless of what they try to tell me.
