2005 4.0 L. Noob to working on the Toyota but have made many mistakes on other vehicles..lol

Besides the normal stuff like taking off the battery cables etc what tips for replacing starter?

No lift but I have ramps (probably not much use if I can't get it started) and floor jacks are available. I have a good set of tools available.

What else needs to come out, tires, wheel well, drive shafts? I assume access from under the truck?

Tried to find an existing thread but alas, nada...

The re+re of the starter is as easy and rudimentary as it gets, nothing much more to say. If you are replacing it because it clicks instead of cranks sometimes (about all that seems to go wrong with these style denso starters unless they are submerged), save yourself some serious coin and replace the contacts and plunger in the solenoid. Its pretty easy to do if you have some basic mechanical skills.

no tricks other than you might need to invest in looooong socket extensions and 2 extension ujoints to get it off.

My 3/8 extensions will go to about 2-1/2 feet with a couple swivel extension and two universal joints.

Nothing like a good excuse to get a really long 1/2...

Is the electrical connector (the small one) a center catch you just pust down in the middle. Sometimes it's really hard to see how the connector comes apart.

Easier or harder than tie rod ends?

    Thanks for the reply
