hello all, need some opinions on my Taco.

so, I am debating on keeping my 08 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Offroad. I am needing to do ball joints, tie rods and CV axles (both axles ripped boots). figured I would just try to freshen up the whole front end of the truck to get a few more years out of it. I have owned the truck for about 10 yrs and just about 215,000 miles on it. been a great little work horse towing more than i probably should and hauling so much that the factory mud flaps would drag going through drain pans and dip. but crawled up under the truck this morning to check things out and found some rust. so hence the title is this BAD or Not To BAD?? no actual holes through the frame that i can see but definitely Splitting the Frame.IMG_2456.jpg IMG_2460.jpg IMG_2455.jpg IMG_2447.jpg

Delaminating is what is happening. Hard to fully assess from just photos, but I wouldn’t buy it if you put it up for sale.

Bad, The Titanic is calling, it's missing some steel.

De-lamination is the kiss of death when it comes to structural steel.

At 10yrs that truck owes you nothing. However, if you did your due diligence you can get several more years out of that.

...if it is that bad in those areas, we know of at least a few others which are likely worse, and probably make it unsafe. ...make sure to look closer in the front up near the cats, etc., and do some tapping in those areas.

Before you come to a decision I would wire frame the areas and see how bad it actually is. If it's not rust through or too thin I would first soak it with a light penetrating oil like Krown or Rust Check. Then I would Fluid Film it. This would need to be done every year.

If the frame is reasonably solid you should be okay for a couple of years but be prepared to soak it every spring and Fluid Film it through the summer.

I would try to squeeze every mile out of that truck for as long as I can. Might as well at this point. :)

...yeah, I'd completely disregard any possible risk it may pose to yourself and others by knowingly directing that 5000 lb projectile down public roads....

It was covered by the replacement program that was extended to the 2009 and 2010 after the lawsuits but it would have to have a 10mm hole for Toyota to admit it was bad enough to replace. Those that were not bad enough got the CRC paraffin coating that dripped and made it rust under the coating so the dealer could later say the program was over but it should not be driven. I got a new frame on my 2009 in 2018 at just over 40,000 miles but I know others where the dealer just sprayed the coating only to rust worse after the program was over. I'm sure my 2023 will suffer the same rust down the road.

I would not put a lot of money into repairs with a frame like that. Put your money into something else and sell it for parts.

    It's a shame you didn't start a maintenance program 10 years ago.

    It's too late now.
