    Took running boards off my Tacoma and was wondering if I should replace the bolts used to hold them up. Just thinking having open areas at the bottom of the frame might not be good long term living here in the North East

    Any time I remove anything that's bolted to the truck I put the bolts back in. You or a future owner may want to replace the item. Also, as you said, it's good not to have those holes exposed.

    From the factory, if you do not have running boards, the holes come with cheap plastic plugs that really don't keep anything out. Maybe find some short bolts to put back to plug the holes, either that or a plug of silicone.
