Good stuff in this thread. I concur with what has already been said - I got a Toyota so I wouldn't have to fix stuff, but I also understand if you are far way from civilization, you'll need a backup plan. Good list of tools and gear here, making me reconsider what I will/will not put in my truck, based on need vs want just in case. Also, first aid kit is a must have.

A small air compressor and tire plug kit comes in handy and costs next to nothing. My 12V compressor cost all of $12 and it has lasted about 20 years. I find myself using it all the time to air up low trailer and implement tires rather than taking the time to go fill up an air bubble. I suppose that if I was really into off-road where I was depressurizing and re-pressurizing tires all the time I'd get a bigger unit but the small one I have works OK well for what I use it for.

Another thing that comes in handy is a poncho and large plastic bag that you can wear and toss down to keep from getting so wet and muddy when changing a tire in the rain.

After I had a truck burn up once in a freak accident I also keep a fire extinguisher behind the seat. I really should mount a larger unit in the bed too.

If you are going to be out where you are likely to get stuck in snow or sand, in addition to the folding entrenching tool that you should have behind the seat, also carry yourself a real shovel. A square-point shovel works better than a pointed one for sand and snow.

What's likely to break that should not have been over looked before you left? Highly unlikely your truck will catch fire and if it does a small extinguisher isn't going to do you as much good as your insurance will.

In all honesty I would reconsider a toolbox as BamaToy mentioned above. I love mine and still wish I had more space in it. It's a convenient locking storage compartment that will allow you to keep all of your cab space

Gotta have the "Taco specific" sockets on hand... Deep well 19, 24, 35mm and a standard socket set. With those you can get most repairs done trail side. Also factor in any mods you might have done ( correct tools for uniball uppers etc.)
