Totes, Containers, Boxes, Storage

Looking for some good/high quality storage for the truck bed. Slide them into the bed and tie them off! Weather proof in regards to water and dust. Not looking for a whole storage system just yet as I plan to use the bed for a lot of different things. But when I go camping or hunting I would like a place to store extra gear. My google fu is not finding what I want so I will turn to you guys. Appreciate the input!

Or 10 haha! I'm sure some people will chime in but that should give you some good reading material to start. The Pelican cases seem to be pretty popular around here. I personally just go with cheapo rubbermaids, they work fine under my tonneau. Ammo cans are also a good inexpensive option.

Hard shell, pelican cases are great. You will pay for it though. I have been able to score a deal here and there, and traditionally a used pelican case works as well as a new one (and they used to have a lifetime warranty with no questions asked).

Harbor freight has a knock off hard case branded as Apache. I was unlucky when I picked one up that was packed inside a pelican box. Long story short, no returns on that, so I have been trying to make the best of the Apache case. The latches are not as good as a pelican, but otherwise it is okay.

I picked up another brand called Nanuk. The plastic is not as rigid a pelican, but the latches and handles are better. Built as a kitchen box.

With each of these cases, there is an ability to have lid organizers. It is easier and cheaper to just buy a lid organizer, but if you want, you could fabricate something yourself, like a molle panel.

 

If hard cases are not a must, then watershed dry bags are impossible to beat for keeping water out. As dry bags go, they are top of the class.

Watershed dry bags come in all shapes and sizes and even have padded liners. I have used Watershed bags on a couple Grand Canyon trips and they handle abuse like no other dry bag. I kept my camera and lenses in a padded bag for the duration of one of my trips and had no worries.

I have some huge bags and I can haul all sorts of gear in them. It is nice to throw stuff n these bags and have no worries about the elements getting to what is inside. If I don’t need a hard case, these are my go to.

With that being said, unless you are around when they are on sale (or know when they are selling their blems), you will spend almost as much as a Pelican case for some of the bags.

 

I spend a fair bit of time on the river and somehow have never seen or heard of these dry bags they look awesome, thanks for the heads up!

 

Pretty sure they are based out of Asheville North Carolina. The owners/employees are whitewater boaters and looked to make a best on the market dry bag. The use a patented ziplock like technology for the seals, and once you get the hang of them, they are bombproof. I can attest to the bombproof after a raft had flipped on the Grand Canyon and proceeded to get worked in an eddy for over 2 hours before we could get it unstuck. The regular dry bags weren't dry. Everything in these was still bone dry afterwards.

To be fair, the stuff in the Pelican cases did really well too. If you need a hard shelled case (and the expensive camera gear in the Pelican needed the hard shell in that situation), then they can't be beat (at the time, which was over 10 years ago). If you can get by with soft sides, watershed are perfect (though expensive).

I use the Costco / home depot / black with yellow top special. Can fit 4, almost 5, in bed and can stack..

 

Plano Sportsman's Totes work well for me. I add some 1/4 rubber weatherstripping into the groove on the lid for extra measure.

 

youtube search this ridgid pro tool box setup. There's a few videos of folks using them for camping. I just got a combination of these and I'm pretty happy. you can get any combination of these containers and they snap together so you can carry them or roll them around as one unit. Or snap them together in any combination to make them fit where you want them while keeping them secure.
