I swapped wheels a few days ago. The new wheels don't have tpms sensors. They were take offs from Craigslist. The old wheels containing the tpms sensors are stored in the garage.

I expected the tpms warning light to come on at some point since it is detecting missing tpms sensors. I've been driving for a few days and no warnings. What's the range of a tpms sensor? How often does the ecu read the pressure data?

Do you park somewhat close to the old tires every day? If so, the system will pick up the sensors and not show the light. The light won't come on for several miles after driving away from the old tires.

I'm parked about 50ft away, and through a steel garage door. I figured even if the ecu will pick up the sensors from that distance, it would flag the warning on my drive to work. And definitely when I start the truck leaving work, which is many miles away from the sensor. But that's not happening. The light does come on for a few seconds at start up, as a diagnostic, but doesn't stay on or flash as expected.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
It was about 15-20 miles before my light would come on after leaving home. But would stay on when i left work since sensors weren't there.

There is a thread on here somewhere about unplugging a box to disable sensors without getting light.

    Unplugging the box doesn't work.

How old are they? TPMS have a battery life.

    I bought my 08 in 2011.
Swapped wheels no sensors no light. Cool I says and sold the stocks that had sensors.
Still no tpms light fast forward to 2017 several different rims without sensors and now they actually check it for inspection.
I removed the gauge cluster to find a piece of black electrical tape covering the bulb.
Does the light show up at startup?

How do they check? Don't think it shows through the OBDII port.

Not 100% sure how maybe by airing up or down a tire. Before here if the light was not on you were ok. Now it says the system is to be checked.

So I asked our local guy how they would check the system.
He says if the light shows at startup then goes out the system has been checked.
But no light at startup they break out the tpms tool to fault the system.
My tires with sensors are 30ft from my truck and it does not turn off the light so range is not very far.

I have my sensors in a wheel barrow tire. Range for me is about 15 feet through a cement wall. I throw the tire in the truck during inspection.

Interesting. So you have all 4 just 'inside'? Then pressurized the tire through the traditional stem?

I've read of the PVC tube deal with the same idea. But your's is simpler.

Although I'm assuming your light is on all the time when the tire is out of the truck? I'll admit, that would annoy me.

That's sad. Ratcheting up the ole nanny.

Yeah. The sensors are tucked in between the tire and the tube. My ABS light is always on also. I just live with it.

I might find a way to store the tire under the truck somewhere. It makes the cab smell like rubber if it's inside.

Lol had an incident here a few yrs ago with the tpms in a pvc tube.
Someone bought a vehicle the previous owner had done this to.
The new owner did not know about it and found it in the car.
The bomb squad was called in and I think the news had said that the previous would be contacted by the pd.

I had to have all five sensors to pass inspection.
Yes kinda again a few yrs ago an elderly couple died because the car passed inspection with rusty brake lines. They actually charged the mechanic for it and held him liable. What they are supposed to check really hasn’t changed by verbiage by they now have to check shit off live online with our dmv photos etc.

Yea it was a big stink I think I posted it in the Vermont section when it was happening.
I was thinking about doing this myself but didn’t have a light on so I didn’t do it. But when I saw the suspicious device with a guy in a bomb suit by it I about pissed myself.

Yes they do have a battery life having issues with the winter set for the wife’s suby now because of this. But this will trigger your light to come on because it loses connection with the computer kinda like your missing one.
