I'm swapping my '03 4WD DC to a manual transmission and I'm wondering if the J-shift transfer case for an A340F (automatic) will bolt up to the R150F (manual). I looked around and found some "answers", but the responses were unsure.

The bell housing on the trans (from auto to manual) will be different. Unless the transfer cases are the exact same model which I don't think they are you might need the J shift that goes with the R150F. I think the automatic has the j shift on the other side as well.

    Hey Dylan,

I see you are trying to swap transfer cases. One of the first things you want to do before you go down this road any further is determine what kind of Toyota four wheel drive system you currently have, and what type of Toyota four wheel drive system the donor vehicle has. There are two types of four wheel drive systems on first generation Tacomas. There is the ADD system, which is the Automatic Differential Disconnect system, and there is the conventional manual locking hub system. They both use two completely different transfer cases. The ADD system is the more modern of the two systems, and the ADD four wheel drive system is almost used exclusively on first generations after 2000 so it is safe to bet your 2003 is an ADD four wheel drive. The conventional four wheel drive system was used a little bit on first generation Tacomas up until about 1999. The next thing you want to do is determine the type of transfer case from the donor vehicle. If the donor vehicle has a conventional four wheel drive system, the transfer case is probably not going to work. It might bolt up, but the two technologies are not going to work together without some major modifications.

I am pretty sure Toyota used the same model transfer case for both the automatic and manual first generation Tacomas on all of the ADD four wheel drives. As Beau pointed out, though, the bolt patterns might be different for the manual and automatic transmission even though the transfer case is the same model. The best thing to do would be to look for a donor vehicle with a transfer case from a first generation that has both a manual transmission and is newer than 2001. This would insure you are going to get a transfer case that is going to fit and work with your new R150F manual transmission.

I could be wrong on my answer so if there are any members out there that know more about this subject than me, please educate me as well. I am not an expert on transfer cases of first generation Tacomas. I just used some scientific thinking to try and help this member out.

    Good Luck,
    Paul

Haha, I'm going the opposite direction, but am wondering the same thing. If the stars align, I might be gutting my 1st Gen to put the driveline in a 2001 T4R. It looks like it would be a serious PITA to put a clutch pedal in the T4R, so I'm thinking about just biting the bullet and getting a pre-00 automatic for it. I'm wondering if the T-case from my R150F will bolt up to it. Is there just a cover plate where the manual transmission shifter goes in? Will a pre-00 automatic be compatible with a 2001? My Taco has manual hubs so I don't have to worry about the ADD BS. The T4R is currently a 2WD so there shouldn't be a 4WD computer or anything to worry about.

Given that the manual shifter and the t-case shifter are directly in line with each other, the t-case shifter is probably in the same place, but the automatic selector is off to the side and I'm guessing is probably cable actuated, but there might be a mechanical linkage.
