My 2017 TRD OR is approaching 60k. I'm thinking to change the fluid myself. I noticed a short lag sometimes in cold morning when I just started driving and have read a long thread in this forum about checking fluid level as it could be low. Instead of going to dealership and asking them to check it I would rather change the fluid myself then fill the fluid to the correct level. Is there a write-up for the fluid change in this forum? I want to replace the filter if possible, which means I need to take off the transmission oil pan. Or if it's to much work, drain and refill is also fine.

A related question is which diagnostic tool/code reader is recommended to read the trans temperature. I also have a 5th gen 4Runner and hope the tool can be used for both trucks. Thanks.

Thanks. The first link doesn't have a step-by-step instruction how to take off the transmission oil pan and filter, nor how to drain and refill then check temperature. The second one is only about refill to correct level.

Also need recommendation about the tool to check temperature.

Anyone has the part numbers of the transmission fluid pan gasket, filter and crush washers for the nuts of the pan? I want to take the pan off to clean then refill it.

Great, thank you! What happened to the pan in the picture? Did you replace the crush washer or O-rings of the bolts or reuse the old ones?

That's the inside of the filter. I cut it open to see how it faired. There seemed to be some aluminum casting flashing in there. But no clutch material etc. Although there was some material stuck to the magent at the bottom of the pan. I did reuse my crush washers. Although it is a bad practice. If you're gonna order parts, night as well order the check and drain plug washers.

Just did my pan drop. Replaced the filter. Fluid was dark red at 75,000 miles so I’m glad I did it.

HOWEVER: I found an o-ring when I was cleaning out my drain pan. I suspect it went on the filter housing where it mates up with the transmission body. How important is this? I don’t recall if the new filter had an o-ring already on the neck or not.

Is the oring oval? I *think* there is one on the transmission side, but the filter side doesn’t have one. Here’s a pic of the new filter just for reference.

I’d say any oring inside the trans is pretty important. If it was me, I’d tear it apart again.

It wasn’t oval. It fits the round hole side that mates up with the transmission. I’m curious if the new one had it installed already and I didn’t notice it. I drove 200 miles and it seems to be fine. We’ll get a blizzard tomorrow and no way I’m laying in the snow to tear it all apart. I don’t have enough fluid to finish the job if I spilled any so it will have to wait. Meanwhile, if anyone has a new filter and can confirm if it already has an o ring on the round hole side, that would be nice.

Pulled it apart this past weekend. The filter housing did not have an O-ring on it so I installed one. So, lesson learned, watch out for the O-ring and don't install it without one.
The good news is that now I have run three gallons of new fluid into my transmission, I've gotten good at the fluid check process, and I probably won't do anything with it for many miles into the future.

All is i can say only doing drain and 4qt refills for my tundra, it was fine. Toyota recommended it every 15k miles, but that was with dexron 2. I had nearly 300k miles when i sold it, no issues how the transmission operated. With this WS atf, at 60k, its gotta be ok to do the same. I was even thinking at 30k for all the fluids.

Might you have the part number for that o-ring? Thanks!
