I have a 2007 Tacoma and last time I changed the oil I screwed up and drained the transmission fluid instead of the oil. I drove it maybe 5 miles and it started slipping so I went the the parts store and bought another oil change and transmission fluid. I changed the oil the right way and filled the transmission fluid and ran the a/t check mode and got that straightened out its done fine for a about 2 weeks and just recently when I hit the throttle it almost sounds like something rattling it only does it for a second. Anyone have any thoughts I have checked everywhere for something that may be loose. It just sounds like something rattling coming from the motor area.

So you added 5 quarts of oil to the motor that already had 5 quarts?

Hard to say if any permanent damage was done to the tranny. Time will tell.

I've gotta ask. Did you check the oil dip stick once you filled it back up?

I triple check things because I'm paranoid I'll make a mistake.

Exactly. We all make mistakes, which will drive you to pay attention. Lol. I recently was landing wires on breakers in a switch gear (it was dead) and cut 2 wires too short thinking they were grounds. The wire run was about 400' long, so it wasnt a matter of pulling new wires. Stupid mistake I'll not make again.

You're putting a very heavy load on the engine, when you push on the gas pedal. Most likely it's a engine knock, so use a higher octane gasoline. Suggest to run down to Walmart get a can of octane booster, see if it stops the knocking . Other guess it might be the connecting rod bearings are shot. Suggest for now get a thicker weight motor oil. Save your pennies for an overhaul or get rid of it.

Wait, what? I don't understand how this happens. I understand that you can accidentally drain the wrong fluid, but once you see that it's red, maybe dark red if dirty, and smells like transmission fluid, I would think you would realize your mistake. If not, then you put oil in and see that the dipstick is extremely overfilled... you then wonder why and realize your mistake.

I do my own maintenance, before I do anything on my vehicles that I'm not 100% sure how to do, I research. Sites like this have saved me a huge amount of money. In fact, if it weren't for forums like tacomaworld, and IH8Mud.com (land cruisers), I would not own all of the cars I have, I would not be able to afford them, and I would not get so much enjoyment out of them. I love being able to fix everything myself.

You should go on Subaru Crosstrek site their's allot of DIY selfers. That mistaken transmission drain plug for an oil plug. The fluid is a special synthetic, only made by virgin Subaru mechanics for Subaru CVT transmissions, you know what that means $$$$. So many Subaru customers mess up that the dealership carries it in 5 gallon containers. Like Toyota they did away with the dipstick tube, you know what that means $$$$! http://www.subaruxvforum.com/forum/...rained-transmission-fluid-not-engine-oil.html Don't blame him blame the manufacturer, both pans are black with basicly the same drain plug size. They could easily change the transmission pan bolt for a torx head or at least paint the pan a Fxxxxxg red color. Then again the manufacture looses business to sell extra fluid and maybe towing, repairs of what you messed up! Now on to those screw up adult proof plastic electrical connectors!
