    help!

    so my 'kitchen table' split last night or this morning or something..
    i realize the photos below make it kinda hard to see but the two halves are uneven in width and pushed against the baseboards to keep em outta the way while i sort this out
    there are also pictures where at some point, it seems like there was a 1x2 bolted to the underside either to mount it or to keep it together?

    background:
    the table top is a butcher block that i recovered from my house in Winston; it was in the house when we looked at the house and i asked the old owners to leave it and they did
    i have had it for ~20 yr and put the legs on at least 15 yr ago

    it split right down a seam between the strands? of wood that comprise the butcher block [i'm sure there is a proper term but IDK it]

    my [bad?] idea is to:
    1. use wood glue to re/glue the seam [sand seam first?]
    2. use some [4?] straps and a couple of 2x4 to keep it all straight while the glue sets
    3. bolt/screw some type of cross beam, across the seam - like the pictures kinda show was once done - to provide support, cause i'm well aware that glue alone won't hold it together [say 2 cross beams? do i need a 3rd?]

    so please tell me what is wrong with my plan so i can adjust things now before i actually screw something up..
    any advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciate as i am just winging this

    Oh no!!! Sorry, that's frustrating.

    It's hard to see where the split is in the photos, so I'm not sure if you're gluing side by side or front and back.

    Either way, re-gluing :thumbsup: 2x4 and straps :thumbsup: (I'm assuming it's side by side split which looks too long for clamps, but I use clamps for gluing generally, straps only if it's too big or irregular)

    Kinda depends what wood you will use for support as to how many. Hardwood, 2 decent pieces would probably do ya, soft wood, you probably want more. Personally I'd rather over-support than under-support unknowingly.

    Frustrating for sure but I can't be mad - it was free, it has held up for 20yr and it is solid, just needs some repairs..
    Maybe one day I'll put fancy legs on it instead of that industrial looking crap!


    These photos should make it clear how the split is.
    It runs lengthwise so I think it is too big to clamp.
    I was gonna put the 2x4 at each end to keep the ends flush when I glue it.

    It is heavy so I am with you on the over-support, what kind of wood would you recommend?

    Oak or ash. They both very strong. Ash is cheaper around here, but it depends on your availability I suppose.
