I need a lighter cap then a hard shell due to payload restrictions. I am considering a softopper. I need something higher then a tonneau cover cause I keep a gunner kennel strapped down in my bed. Is the softopper my only option if i want something higher then the bed rails but also light?

How light you talking? Alu-Cab Contour Canopy is only 125lbs.

So far I'm happy with getting a Fas-Top that differs from other soft toppers for the all on one open bed, tonneau and soft topper. You can get the optional screen to replace the clear plastic window in back. There's a YouTube video from a guy that explains how with sewing velcro he made front and back screens with fairly fast having them sealed for rain too.

The all in one might not work for frequent use of tonneau if I understand your description and Fas-Top makes soft topper only. They also have a compatible rack system.

My setup absolutely addresses the weight and maximum payload along with the flexibility but I can understand how it might not be for everyone. Fas-Top web site shows all they have and can do.
