I've been looking to buy a Tacoma, I am looking at used due to the cost, not that the new is a lot but it is a secondary driver. I am confused by the multiple tag goings and then add to that the new found TSS, I'm not sure. I'm looking for something that can go highway (I have a motorcycle to occasionally put in the back, bmw k1200rs... I figure I will have to have the tailgate open) but get out and explore the dunes and trails in the area. So 4x4 is a must. I'm interested in modifying it if needed for off reading. I'd like the TRD Pro but like I said, with the cost and a secondary vehicle (for commuting I have a 42mph car... Hard to beat) it doesn't seem practical.

There are some used 2012 models here but the different badging seems confusing. Any issues, needs, or suggestions?

Is the TSS really anything significant? How is the rear drive for off-roading? Should I go for the off-road?

I'm looking at buying possibly as early as this week.

    Thanks!

"Raptor Style" grill mod, aftermarket wheels, 265/75/16 Goodyear Wrangler Authorities, TRD Shoulder pads on seat belts, no mud flaps, AVS Hoodflector bug shield *removed*, Dee Zee Ultrablack Bull Bar w/ license plate mount, dipped my fuel door for no reason, N-Fab Spare tire mount w/ full size matching spare, dipped eyelids onto my headlights for no reason, dipped my hood for no reason
I'd go for the off road. I have rear wheel drive and regret it. The off road package is not as expensive as TRD Pro and it sounds like it's exactly what you need!

    OME Lift
TSS is a cosmetic package. Trd off road comes with upgraded shocks & springs as well as seats and rear locker. Trd pro's main advantage is the lift, but that can easily be add by you for less. IMO if you want a Trd pro look, buy a SR5 4x4 model and add all the parts you want afterwards.

like they said TSS is just frilly stuff, TRD Off Road/TRD Pro will come with a locking rear differential, if you're interested in off roading it, for functionality I'd suggest the OME 3" lift, no spacers or blocks and definitely the best bang for your buck IMO, put some 285's or 255's on there and hit the trails

edit: if you're worried about fitting a motorcycle, double cab long beds are an option but don't come with the TRD off road package. Or if you dont need a full back seat, the access cab models are offered with TRD off road packages, so you get the 6' long bed but still have the shorter wheel base of a double cab short bed.
