    Doesn't need its own battery.

My husband and I put an Optima Yellow Top battery in our jeep. That thing went through years of winching service without failure and was still strong when we sold the jeep.

Something to think about.... if you are the recovering vehicle, you might wanna think about rigging up a hand-throttle so you can set the rpm's up higher while winching. This helps keep the battery charged while winching (so to speak). Having a hand throttle setup is much easier than having the vehicle in nuetral, while having the foot on the brake & the gas.

    Hey Gang,

Couple things to think about: Warn rates their winches at stall. Superwinch rates at clean pull and the stall is usually higher. Superwinch uses Solid State solenoids not the cheap clicky solenoids others use. Can you say waterproof? Superwinch drums are thicker and will not crush with Synthetic Rope installed. Roller fairlead is always better than Hawse - big concern is heat generated from dragging synthetic rope over something (wire as well but..) so the roller is nicer to the rope in all conditions. Amsteel Blue is UV stable and not fazed by the elements. Because you are mostly running Trucks a 9000 pound winch is where I suggest you start. Usually is suggest running the wire and getting used to handling the stiff stuff and how it feels and works. Then go to Amsteel Blue and you will be more practiced....however some Superwinch units come with Amsteel Blue already installed. So there you have it...

    anyway... my .02cents.

Well maybe not a million bucks but certainly a buck or two! ;) Another way Bill has explained it was that most companies use a similar contact mechanism that we used to have with cars/trucks with points. They tend to burn after a while and then the burn mark on the contacts end up being an insulator when the burned part gets too large. At that point your winchy no workie! :( Did I get that right Master Bill?

BTW I was talking with a friend - a famous actor back East and he said that he went on a trip with you and said I shouldn't be too worried about almost running you over! He sent me a picture of when you had him in your ride...

Anyone have any experience with the Warn refurbished winches? I am looking at the XD9000. Does it come with a remote?

Okay Murph, I told you not to let my Thermarest out of the bag! Since being with you my doll hasn't been the same. I can't get the grin off the face, and it is difficult getting back into the stuff sack. Now you know why I sleep so well in the woods!!

If you guys check out Summit Racing or Northern Tool they sell Superwinch for a good deal. I think Winchline/Viking Off Road sells the Superwinch with Amsteel Blue. Just a suggestion before you lay down $$$ for a "deal" on a winch.

Ok, so I didnt want to start a whole new thread. What would be a good battery to replace the OEM one when installing a winch? I am eventually going to be running a dual battery set up, but I want the right battery. Optima Yellow top, Sears die hard platinum? I dont really know a lot about batteries.

Optima Yellow Top is a deep cycle battery and is good for running the winch.

Red Top is a starting battery and doesn't like to be run down. People I've seen running a dual battery set up run the Red top for starting and the Yellow Top for the winch. WATRD runs two Yellow Tops for his set up.

So a yellow top for now as a single battery and then when I get the dual set up move that as the 2nd batter and get a red top for the main battery?
