    Your thoughts are spot-on!

The AUTO LSD (as Toyota calls it) is an OPEN differential (no clutch paks). Controlled via wheel sensors and braking.

Are you sure you don't have the LSD? Many SR5 trucks had the mechanical LSD as an option. Have you looked at your rear diff and looked for that infamous sticker?

I think problem with Synthetic oils lays in their stickiness.
BTW its not friction that makes it work in clutch pack LSD. Its a hydraulic movement between two surfaces. If it was just friction they would not last as long as they do.
Whole thing is based o n the idea that if you put two surfaces very close to each other but separated by thin film if one surface moves it will transfer the movement to other surface. Synthetics could be too sticky for thin film.

I have been reading this thread, getting ready to peform my 30,000
maintence on my 2009 TRD sport 4 wheel drive. Looked under truck and no lsd sticker, just a sticker that states to look in owners manual for fluid
type. ( been aircraft mech for 33 years, i read maint manuals). Owners
manual has no callout for an lsd additive. The manual explains that the traction control works off the brakes. Hope this helps

OK, I'm sold now - using Amsoil 75W90 severe gear in my '09 rear diff, with no additive. 30k maintenance this weekend. I trust you guys much more than toyota techs. Glad I decided against letting Toyota do it, bunch of stooges who just answered "use LSD additive" since everything they've done on Tacomas have had mechanical LSD as I'm assuming they haven't done many '09 and up 30k service yet. So rather than listening to the question and looking it up, they just answer off the cuff. Fuggers!

Interesting. I was visualizing a similar setup as a wet clutch for a motorcycle.

Status report: Amsoil 75W90 severe gear used in rear diff of 2009 TRD sport 4x4. After 300 miles, no chattering. :) Also did front diff and xfer case with Amsoil 75W90 along with Amsoil 5W30 for the engine. I may have even gained a little mpg  but need more milage to tell for sure.

I was thinking about when I called Toyota and asked about whether I needed the additive or not and I said I had an '09 with the electronic LSD (not the mechanical one from '05 - '08 models) and they said I still needed the additive. Anyway, I guess without them looking it up, they just heard LSD and gave me an answer. I suppose techically, it's not LSD because it's not in the differential. It's limited slip traction control, not a limited slip differential. The more appropriate name as Toyota calls it would be VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) via EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution).

    nailed.
but if Toyota changed name it would be bad for marketing. So they stick Auto- infront of the name and pretended its the same thing. Plus think about extra money they will make, brake pads and rotors will wear faster, plus any part that fails in that system its double priced over the old counterpart. Also its harder to troubleshot since it is digital system instead of analog and nobody is going to spend $1500 on TIS. So off to the dealership which will be making a fortune ... :D
Thats how US companies work it was time for Toyota to get in line with others.

This morning I changed my rear gear lube and used 3 quarts of Valvoline convential 80W90 and a tube of EquaTorque modifier. It was super easy to do this maintenance and rearend shudder is gone.

I changed my rear diff oil out with some regular 80-90W valvoline gear oil and used redline friction modifier and it was good to go.

Problem was I didn't come back to TW to check otherwise I would have seen this was a problem for my 05 sport, but what the hey I says Ill see when it starts chattering. It's been a little over 300 miles and no chattering. I will update in a few 100.

I know from your post dates that im about two years late to your convo, but i figured this would be useful to some Taco owners.
