Center Console Mod - Pic Heavy

So I was browsing this forum and came across the thread for the center console organization mod that a lot of people have done. It is a pretty easy mod and is a great way to organize your console.

Here are the parts that I got from Amazon.com:

Grid-It organizer:

and then some 3M double sided tape from Home Depot. Other people used Velcro, but I dont really plan on removing this organizer any time soon, so the permanence of double sided tape was fine for me.

So you do have to shave a lot of the edges on the Grid-It to make it fit. Here are some pics of my process:

1. I cut the edge with a razor blade to expose the plastic frame on both sides where I grinded down the edge.



2. Then I used a Dremel tool to grind down the black plastic frame all the way down until you start to see the stitching that is holding the elastic pieces and the outer edge in place. **be careful not to grind too far because if these stitches come loose, the straps will come apart. When you finish grinding, you can trim up the frayed edges and use a lighter to singe them shut so they do not fray anymore:


Some people just cut around the pieces where the hinges go, but I found that cutting along the entire piece made it fit much better because of the recessed hump for the spring assembly.

3. Next I wiped down both surfaces with alcohol to make sure they were clean and free of debris or oil and then layed down a a few strips of 3M "extremely strong" double-sided tape on the console itself.


4. Lastly, I placed the Got-It organizer on the double sided tape:


Then I just placed the cover back on the console lid and VIOLA!!!! Perfect!


The only thing I did notice is that, even with all the trimming, The lid does not fully close on its own. You have to press a bit to get it to latch, but it still works just fine and its not like I have to really force it down. I just didnt want to have to shave any more off the Grid-It in fear of messing up the structure for the elastic bands. Here is what it looks like before you press it closed:



All in all a great mod for organizing your console. Very easy and definitely worth the money!!!

Hopefully this helps anyone that has not done this yet. I know there are other posts about this, but I just thought I'd contribute.

Genius! Adding to my list. My center consol looks like a wreck in there.

 

Just one note on this for some. (not saying anything bad about it). I did this recently and fond the weight of the organizer alone was too heavy. the door always wants to drop or close. Once i added anything too it that made it even heavier. meaning you can't open the lid and keep it open. it's going to always want to close on you (which i'm sure is not a big deal to some but i found it too annoying)



So no big deal. just want you guys to realize this. Unless it was just my door for some reason be unbalanced.

This is for the OP how did you remove the Center-console?

 

I've had my OCD organizer and tray for a few months now and it bothered me that I couldn't get my hand into the larger middle section(center divider left out) so I modded the tray with some ABS.

 

has anyone else given up on adhesive and just used screws?

 

I glued my grid to a cut to fit piece of cardboard, then used the same tape as OP and it's help up great. I found the cardboards smoother surface kinda adhered better. Mines loaded too, holds a good bit of weight.

 

I ended up using screws. Tried double faced tape first but in summer heat the tape wouldn't hold.

 

just did this mod and looks great. Just a not, I only had to shave off one side of the grid, and only where the two swivel arms are so that it can close. about 3/4-1' in length. ALSO I slightly bent the grid so that it is curved towards me. It allows the grid to pop in and stay taught. Also the zipper in the back acts like a secret pocket.

 

This is amazing - just ordered the grid thingie - and I will install that ASAP. I hate not being able to find my knife, tape measure, flash light etc...rarely need to use them, but I have a bad habit of losing shit if said shit does not have a designated place1
