Hey everyone, im new here, not sure if this is where i should be posting this.

My parents are looking to buy me a new car, and my dad really wants a truck, and really has his mind set on the tundra or tacoma. I was wondering is the leap from non-TRD to TRD is a big difference? I saw this tacoma there that was white, with black trd rims and bigger tires, i fell in love with it, but my dad tells me that because it is 4x4 it will use more gas, is this true?

I love the look of the tacoma, cant wait to get my own =D

 

A 4x4 uses more gas than a 2wd for sure, maybe 2-3 mpg.

A 4x4 has more parts, thus it has more weight, which will decrease your gas mileage a little.

The TRD has improved Shocks, Seats, Coils, Wheels, and an upgraded differential. My Taco is a TRD Off Road, and my next Taco will also be a TRD Off Road.

 

Was it the 4.0L or the 2.7L?? Their are lots of mpg threads here.Cost of the trd would be a big difference.While those rims & tires look great,you may do better going aftermarket.Are you going to lift it?? What kind of 4 wheeling do you do? Talk it out w/your dad. Oh, Welcome to TW.

 

Some ?s for you. Do you get much snow where you live? Or do you think you will want to go off-roading? If so, how severe?

If you can answer yes to either of these ?s then yes get the TRD.

The TRD will cost more to buy and to operate.

 

im gonna be completely honest, we dont get any snow where i live (its about a 1 hour drive to the nearest place with snow). I dont see myself mobbing it often, unless i find a good place.

Really, i am just in love with the look of a raised tacoma with black rims. I know i can do it all aftermarket, but was wondering if it would be cheaper to get one already done by them. If i dont get the TRD, id like to raise it 2-4 inches, but again, would it just be cheaper to get one that already has that stuff on it? (28000 sticker price)

 

None of the trucks come with a lift.

You might want to look into the TRD Off Road Rugged Trail package as it already comes with black wheels. You could get that and a set of 5100s ($269) and then you will have a truck with black wheels and a 2" lift.

 

They sell some lifted tacomas here. Their prices are about th same and they come with aftermarket rims with the correct backspacing for 33" tires. They also warranty the entire truck as if it were stock. They told me that when the recieve the trucks they pick out a few to send to Virginia and have the lifts installed then trucked back. Why I don't know.

Back on topic, I don't have the TRD but have the 4x4 purchased with 18 miles for 28,000 and some change. I would rather put my own rims and tires on the trucks but if you like what they have go with it. The mileage difference is minor. IMHO! But if you don't offroad much the 2x4 TRD is a great truck.

TRD does cost more to buy but does not cost more to operate, there is no extra maintenance needed for a TRD

most people believe that a 4x4 gets much worse mileage than a 4x2. the 4x4 is a couple hundred lbs heavier, which means it is not quite as fast, but does not affect mileage any more than a full grown man sitting next to you in hte passenger seat. i have a 4x4 with 32 inch tires and a 2.5 lift and i get the same mileage as many of the 4x2 guys report on this site. 22 highway and 16 or 17 city. and while the TRD is not more to operate, a 4x4 does cost more to maintain.

 

To many factors go into gas mileage. Browse the forum here and you'll see the wide range. I've got a double-cab 4x4 and I get 20-22mpg. Not to many claiming anything much higher with either 4x4 or 4x2.

My opinion though.. if dad is paying for it and gives you the option for a TRD package... GO FOR IT!!!!

that was exactly the package i saw, with the half cab in the back, i fell in love with it. But my dad keeps it in his head that the 4x4 with offroad package will ruin my gas mileage

and if i had gotten that package, i really wouldnt mind not putting a lift on it, i already like that it is a little higher, is the ride that much worse also?

aslo, we were looking @ the 4.0l v6.

 

Ask your Dad to get you the basic 4 cylinder 2wd with a 5 speed. With a couple cheap mods and the right driving style it's capable of netting you over 27MPG. You'll have a good dependable truck that will last you for decades or hundreds of thousands of miles.
Then ask him to take the 10 thousand saved on the truck and open a retirement account in your name which will give you a great head start on an early retirement.

 

lol, well we need a v6

though i wont go offroading, my dad does all the house mods and shit, so we currently use an old 92 previa basically as a truck, and he really wants a strong v6 this time.

 

The Off Road package does not effect mileage at all. 4x4 will only take away maybe 1MPG.

Get what you want and just be light with the gas pedal. I've managed to get 24MPG Highway in my Taco TRD Off Road.

Ride quality with a lift depends on what lift you want.

 

Must be nice for your parents to buy you a new truck.

 

LOL what we want isn't necessarily what we need is it? If he's getting by with that old clunker then he doesn't really NEED the V6.

Tundra claims to get 17-18mpg, or about the same as an unmodded V6 Tacoma so.......
