House remodeling is a ...

Started to remodel the house today, a little bathroom on the first floor. My wife took off the wallpaper yesterday, and I took out the toilet, sink, cabinet, melamine, and the bottom half of the sheetrock, and then clean up the mess. Man am I whooped ! This is my first real stab at this, my wife is really good at anything she does, I pretty much just get by. I did not put a schedule in mind, I would just take it as it goes, but she seems to think that she was going to be painting it this week, the new toilet won't even be in until the first of the week, I hope I can keep up with her .

I try to be handy around the house as much as the next guy, but you have bitten off quite a lot of work. Good luck! I am sure you are saving a bundle on labor costs. I am also sure that some of that saved money should go into the Taco.

 

Doooood, I know exactly what you're going thru..... My husband and I are more at home in the garage than working on the house.

Our first major home remodeling project was our 1/2 bath. We figured....we'll start with something small. If we screw that up, atleast it's only the 1/2 bath.

Two years ago we tackled the 1/2 bath. What a PITA!! The wallpaper was the worst. It took us DAYS to get it off. The people who installed the wallpaper didn't treat the drywall. I had to use a scoring tool and liquid stuff (can't remember name) to break down the glue. The drywall ripped off anyway in certain areas. We had tons of spackling & sanding to repair the wall. We installed tiles in the floor - that was a neat 'challenge' and turned out really good. Toilet and vanity was a no-brainer.

We have a buddy who's a professional painter. He's given us a ton of tips/hints/ and help with the project - along with our current project, we painted our spare bedroom. That was interesting, because the previous owner sponge painted the walls and there was LOTS of imperfections and they did a crappy ass job at cutting in and leaving drips & such.

Feels good to get it done though...and we have tons of ideas to do to the rest of the house!! Yet another hobby that'll rid your wallet....

 

Yeah remodeling is a pain in the ass. Our house was built in the early 1900's from what we can gather and appears to have the original windows, doors, and 6+ layers of wallpaper over plaster and lath. Needless to say we decided to just tear down the plaster in our front hallway, drywall, and paint. It'll be faster than trying to get 100yr old wallpaper off. We struggled with that for a couple weeks until I said "F it!", and we stopped scraping. The more we scraped, the more cracks we found anyway so might as well replace it all. Would like to get that done this summer (make pack some insulation in before the drywall), but need to get new windows too.

I can usually figure things out, but the amount of crap that needs to be done to this house is mind numbing sometimes. Just get tired of fixing crap.

 

I agree, it is a pain. Since last year when my g/f moved in, I have put wood flooring in the living room, completely redone the down stairs bathroom with new jetted tub, new toilet and sink. Tiled the bathroom, hall and kitchen floors, installed new windows in the hole house and painted 3 rooms, which included removing old wall paper in the kitchen, and I'm afraid that I'm just getting started. By the way it took 3 days to get all that friggin wall paper off.

 

remodeling is definitely a pain in the arse!!! the wife and i are starting to work on our condo.....in hopes of selling it in the near future and getting a house with some land.

we have stripped all the wall paper in the entire place, getting ready to paint.....first the bathrooms, then the living room/den and kitchen areas. also, gotta redo our countertops, put in newer windows, and install updated light fixtures in the bathroom. its a pretty old,out of date condo, so alotta work to make it sell worthy. end results should be good......but nevertheless a pita to begin with. also.....gotta replace the carpet(it looks like complete ass...stains and crap from my workboots)....but i think we will give whoever buys it later on a carpet allowance, so we dont have to replace it till we are outta here.

 

Been there man, my first house was a mess I gutted the kitchen and most of the bathroom. I would work all day at my job then work on the house at night and on weekends. Lots of luck!

 

Last year we remodeled the house, houses in mexico are built with bricks, concrete, no wood.....we had ceramic tile, take it all of and put new, remodeled the kitchen cabinets, bathroom new tile, paint.... damn mess....

Stupid me, I asked my wife to make a list of projects that need done around the house. (In my defense I was thinking it would be easier to get them done) After seeing the list I am sorry I asked.

 

So I am driving home from Lowes, I have the 2x6's in the grooves in the bed of the truck, and built an extension so to keep the ends from drooping, and low and behold I get a couple of miles from the house and all my sheetrock, and wainscoating slide out on to the highway, a really nice lady pulled over and helped me reload the stuff and a cop pulled up behind me and kept the traffic off my materials. I could not have driven any easier, but need to get some sticky material and attach to the wooden frame, I wrecked a piece of the wainscoating beyond use will have to work on my system.

 

damn.....hate to hear that man. u think some truck bed coating material will work?? you can get it pretty cheap at walmart.

 

Great Idea, I've seen the stuff you can even spray on, I'll fix that wheel !
