Mobil 1 change

Hi everyone, well its winter here in New England, still very cold and windy. My 06,V6, 6spd was well beyond its oil change time and I had originally tried to time it for the warm weather when I could do the maint myself, however old man winter is still here and I took it to a good local garage to finally get the dino oil out of there and syn in, along with the standard Toyota filter.

Checking the oil yesterday I was surprised it was very close to the full mark and relatively clean for six thousand on it.
While it was in there they did the 15K check and replaced the air filter and it could have gone another 8 months.
So its new life begins today with full-syn Mobil One.
I did ask my mechanic what he thought the change interval should be and he said anywhere between 5-6 thousand should do the trick.

Why would you want to change oil that only has 500 miles on it? It's not like it gets dirty or loses its properties just sitting idle.

 

Many people say you can go up to 10K miles on full syn but what they don't take into account is the filter. It will still get dirty and plugged up long before the oils goes tits up. I still change my mobil1 every 5K miles.

 

I hope I did not throw a curve to everyone, my 06, Radiant Red beauty has 16,500 on the odometer. My last oil change was 10,200. If I had a garage I would do it my self but..........as you know the maint light goes off every 5000miles.
My mechanics ( whom I use a little as possible) love the truck, considering my last car was a mint 96 Monte Carlo Z-34 , which was on of GM poorer cars. Had all sorts of design flaws, parts wearing out well before there time.

As far as I am concerned as long as I have the maint done close to Toyota's specific time frame, it will be covered.

There's a BIG difference between 6 months used infrequently and a couple of years sitting totally idle.

Plus, moisture isn't really a problem unless you have the car out in the elements without a hood and the oil cap off. Ambient moisture penetration (depending on where you live) shouldn't be that bad, especially if it's under garaged conditions or similar protection.

I had a Suburban sit in the driveway 1.5 years+ after an oil change and drained it just to make sure it didn't collect any moisture/crap...etc, before I sold it. The oil was as clear as the day it went into the motor.

During that same time frame we replaced a valve cover and upon removal we noticed absolutely no rust or pitting on any exposed components. The engine had 72,000 miles on it and was not "pickled" or plastic sealed on the intake. I was amazed.

Changing it out after only 6 months with the low mileage on the oil seems like a waste of $$$. But I guess it' won't hurt it, and it is your $$$ to waste.

Why don't you just start the vehicle and let it warm up every couple of weeks to get a good coating on the parts? Have someone do it for you if you can't do it yourself.

Is it in storage? I noticed you are probably in the service.
