Silver TRD OR build

Happy to be back in a Tacoma after a number of years since giving up my supercharged gen 1 TRD in college. Had a great time camping and mountain biking with my buddies in Moab with that truck and damn happy to have a rig capable of some adventuring again.

Spec'd out my ideal build, was ready to order, but found one on the lot at a local dealer.

Best of all, it hadn't even been test driven yet, HVAC had never been turned on, etc. Factory wrapping still on all the seats and dirt on the paint from transit. Convinced the dealer to let me bring it home as is so I could do all the detailing myself and unwrap everything.

Normally I drive manuals. But I've got two other sports cars and decided the Tacoma wasn't something I wanted to row my own gears in.

Detailing time

First step is decontaminating the paint. It's a new car but you'd be amazed what can get trapped in the paint during transit.

Step 1: de-iron with

$27 CARPRO IronX Iron Remover: Stops Rust Spots and Pre-Mature Failure of The Clear Coat, Iron Contaminant Removal - 500mL with Sprayer (17oz)

That purple is why you de-iron even new car paint.

I tested a few areas with nanoskin but the paint was super slick so it didn't seem necessary to do a full clay bar decon.

Step 2: tape off the trim and anything you don't want sealant on. I use automotive green 233+ tape since it comes off clean and doesn't leave residue like blue painters tape.



Step 3: application of Jescar Power Lock Plus polymer sealant. Have used this stuff a ton of times and it's amazing. Easier to work with even than wax and way more durable.

Sub'd! Need to earmark for when I pull the trigger on a 3rd Gen. Looking for a very similar setup (but want to row gears). Nice work so far!

Front windshield: Air Blue 80%
Front windows: Llumar CTX 40%
Rear windows: LLumar CTX 60%

Overall the combination looks great and heat rejection is superb. Given the VLT numbers from this thread I put together this spreadsheet to calculate the final VLT for all windows since our rears come tinted from the factory. But the factory tint has no real heat rejection benefits so still useful to add tint.

Could have gone darker on the front to match the rears, but 40% film is a good compromise between heat rejection, looks, and not so dark as to attract LEO attention.

 

Would totally have gone with a manual gearbox if this was my only car. I sometimes miss rowing gears in this thing but it's fantastic. And the SSP helps
