Where the wireless Apple CarPlay headunits at?

I was about to pull the trigger on an

$280 Alpine ILX-W650 Digital Multimedia Receiver with CarPlay and Android Auto Compatibility

Alpine ILX-W650 touchscreen head unit, but then I saw you can only use Apple CarPlay when your iPhone is plugged IN. I need a double-din that I can use a backup camera and WIRELESS Apple CarPlay with.

$299 Pioneer MVH-1400NEX Digital Multimedia 6.2" Display with Apple CarPlay (Does Not Play CDs)

Pioneer MVH-1400NEX was another one I was looking at, but I'm not sure if it can do WIRELESS Apple CarPlay. Can anyone confirm this?

 

Do yourself a favor. Toss the iPhone in the trash and get a android phone.

I have a wired 1300nex carplay right now, I love it but I'm so sick of connecting the phone for every drive over 5 minutes.

 

What year is this? How old are you?

 

If your wanting wireless, do yourself a favor and keep the iPhone lol. If your looking at the pioneers, any with a a in the model ( nex models ) will have wireless and wired. They will do Apple and Android

Kendwood has a couple models but I can’t remember them off the top. Just go to the website and you will find them

 

I have the Kenwood 906 and the wireless CarPlay works great. Only issue is being to close to my home WiFi makes it take a minute to connect.

 

cd20h...the op has an iPhone and wants wireless CarPlay. So you want him to spend money on a stereo AND a phone that’s not needed. This isn’t about the iPhone vs Android debate.

Pioneer or now the new kenwoods would would be a great choice. Can’t go wrong really. Just depends on the budget and features you are looking for ie. time alignment, eq, screen quality etc.

 

I don’t know what the best options are - but honestly I have little love for airplay. It may be better than nothing and it may be cheaper than a dedicated navigation system - but I find myself disconnecting it almost more often than using it.

 

I have the Kenwood Excelon DDX9906XR. I’m pretty happy with it. Elsewhere I posted looking for help with an installation challenge I encountered but I got it resolved quickly. You can filter search results on Crutchfield.com to find units with wireless CarPlay. It’s way better than plugging in.

FWIW, I like my iPhone and my stereo. I just feel that CarPlay is a compromise. My phone automatically connects to my car - so the phone and it’s navigation prompts work fine without CarPlay (added bonus they work wirelessly). When I plug in, however CarPlay causes me to loose stereo features and the CarPlay apps tend to be less functional than the phones. The only real purpose I see in it was caused by lobbyist, they all but outlawed using the phones apps in the car, but not if the car controls them. My solution is to use the native navigation in the car - the bluetooth control is enough for hands free with the phone.

Of course, it did not help that my first trip with a car play enabled navigation started us in West Texas every time we connected, and then only updated the location based on distance and direction we drove. Apparently the headset had it’s own gps module (to cut down on amps used by the phone), but something just did not communicate well. A software update a few months latter (and probably 1000’s of complaints to Jeep) mysteriously fixed it. But man did I start hating Fort Stockton.
