Airbag won't be reset by unplugging the battery.
Very few codes are cleared that way on OBD-II vehicles.

Pull the stereo and double check all of the connections on the factory harness, particularly the yellow cables.
Something either got unplugged, or shorted and a fuse blew.

Thanks for the reply. I just read on crutchfield and they suggested to not unplug the airbag connections when removing the center trim to access the radio. Arghh!! the light annoying! What fuses do I check for and do I check the fuse box under the dash or under the hood? What fuses do I look for? I also have an obd-2 reader, will the clear the airbag light? I have no check engine light. thanks

Did you turn the ignition key on while anything was unplugged?

If so, the system just needs to be reset.
The DIY and auto parts store scanners can't do it... dealer is needed on the 2nd Gen.

Same thing happened to me on my 09, I know different year, but you still have the key to disable the passenger airbag, right? Check the wiring there, behind it and make sure you didn't bump anything, my light came on when I unplugged my passenger airbag light, although I just plugged it back in it took a while for it to reset itself. Check the fuses too, justin case.

Fuses are usually in the fuse box under the quarter panel in the driver footwell and under the hood, look for srs and/or airbag

Being the dummy head that I am sometimes....Yes I did. I turned the key on right after plugging in the stereo harness to make sure the stereo head unit turned on and all speakers were working. I have 99 tacoma first gen. How do I reset the system? Thanks for reply.

Ok ill check it. Yea I also have a key switch to turn the passenger airbag on or off and I believe the airbag light is coming from the passenger air bag module thats part of the center trim. This is what I unplugged when I removed the trim to access the stereo. And as I mentioned, I was a dummy to turn the ignition on with this module unplugged. Thanks for the replies.

Mick said that his reset itself "after a while"
Any other time I've heard someone do that, they end up going to the dealer to have it reset.

Might want to give it a couple of weeks, maybe cycle the passenger airbag key a few times... drive a couple of days with it on and a couple with it off and see if it clears itself... If so, it'll save you $60 or $70. If not, if you're out in the eastern valleys, hit up Glendora Toyota. They're good guys and have always done right by TW members.

Did you by chance leave anything unplugged behind the panel (like the key switch)? On a 99, I'd think it would reset once the condition is corrected. I just resolved an airbag issue with my 96 (slightly different) and disconnected the battery for the repair. I believe the SRS computers only store crash data, not minor service related data like switches that need to be replaced, bad spiral cables, etc. The other likely cause would be shorting out a wire and blowing a fuse while messing around down there. I've done that one several times myself (usually the EFI fuse).

Also look here. Sound similar? http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/te...orking-airbag-light-after-working-stereo.html They mention the IGN1 fuse.

I'd double check your wiring then disconnect the battery terminal for about 30 minutes. The SRS computer has a capacitor to fire the air bag but that should discharge once the battery's disconnected for that long. Once you reconnect the battery it will run like crap for about 2-3 trips until it learns from the sensors again. It scared the crap out of me when I did it but after a few trips, all was well once again.

Thanks for the reply! I checked the fuse box, under the dash and under the hood, and I didnt find anything said airbag or SRS. I'm pretty sure that I plugged all the electrical stuff back in. I tested the passenger air bag and it seems to be working (yellow light comes on when turned OFF, yellow light turns off when ON). If I missed a plug I dont think that would work.

I'm going to reset my battery here in a few minutes. Ill let you guys know the result :) And thanks for that link. Ill also check the IGN1 fuse. Thanks.

Fail! I removed the negative battery terminal for about an hour an half with no result! Dam airbag light still stays lit. What the heck! I only checked the IGN fuse 7.5 amp and it looks good. Used a volt meter to test the fuse and it went beep. The previous post/link said to check the IGN1 fuse but mine is labeled IGN without the 1. Is this the same fuse? Any other ideas on how to reset this dog gone thing! the heck with it! thanks again for all the replies! please give me more suggestions. im trying to avoid going to the dealer! all other electronics appear to be working; a/c button, temperature control, and direction. thanks

Mine reset itself after about 75 miles, I was trading in my 09 for my 11 and replacing the radio in the process, did the same thing, checked the radio before hooking everything back up. Just my experience, newer model would probably have different software etc, self clearing codes etc. I was just glad by the time the dealer had it, the light went off!!

Any other updates on this topic? I recently replaced my factory head unit and had this light come on. I also dropped a bolt beside the passenger seat and had to slide it back and forth to find the bolt. I checked the connections under the seat and everything seems to be ok. Would there be any connections behind the stereo that could have got unplugged? I did turn the stereo on while it was not bolted in on my 2006 to make sure everything worked.

Or... My stereo got stolen by some losers this weekend. And they ripped my big Pioneer out so hard wires are everywhere, and airbag lights are turned on.

    Fun

I had same problem on my 99. I have a snap on scanner though and was able to reset it no problem. As mentioned before it should clear itself after so many trips (40 if I remember correctly)

I feel your pain! 02 PreRunner and the airbag light went on about a month ago. Now the stereo system suddenly went out!

Common theme seems to be some link between the SRS and stereo systems. I wonder if they share a common ground point and a change in the stereo amperage when non OEMs are installed is somehow causing an abnormal signal to the SRS ECU...? Just seems like a possible link between the two systems.

I have an 04 that I replaced my radio earlier this year. My airbag light now comes on and off intermittently, depending on what bump you hit. I was told I probably have hit a wire or connection and knocked it loose. I was told to pull the radio back and check the airbag wiring in that vicinity. The airbag wiring will by yellow,

My 99 has an aftermarket stereo and the airbag light has been on since I got it. I have no idea how to turn it off and was thinking this thread might provide the answer
