Bed liner just for the bed rails/tailgate rail

My truck already has a spray on bed liner, not sure what type though and has held up very well. Problem is, the rails were never done and I checked (all I want done in the left/right bed rail and tailgate rail) with Rhino and they want $250 locally and Line-X wants $225 and they are 70 miles from me. Don't know what to do

Go to your local autostore. Buy an aerosol can of duplicolor truck bed coating for $10 bucks. Prep the area & spray.

Takes 40 minutes & it'll save you $240 bucks. It's just black & will blend in with what they sprayed in your bed.

 

I would go for metal bedrail covers, over the plastic ones.

For me it's over the rail on the tail gate only. That DIY stuff is pretty much trash in a can.

 

Meh, I've got a raptor liner on my rockers, the original drop in bed protector that came with the truck & the duplicolor aerosol stuff on my rails. Raptor Liner is by far better than Rhino or Line-Ex. And you'd be suprised the duplicolor is holding up really well on the rails. I wouldn't use the stuff in my bed but for little stuff like that. I'm actually impressed with it.

All in the prep really.

That's the reason why I do like it. Not for your reason though. I wouldn't call it hiding rust but rather taking care of the rust issue. When my rockers started showing the first sign of rust I put that raptor liner on. Spray etch primer on the bare metal & you've essentially fixed the issue.

Sorta of like getting a new paint job really. And with it being on the rockers no more rock chips It's sort of the reason why there's a trend of more & more people just spraying their whole vehicle with the stuff. Even newer vehicles.

 

If it get punctured or has a pin hole in an area where it's been applied over rust the only thing it does at that point is create an area for more rust to fester between the coating the the metal. It's kind of like shitting your pants and just putting on fresh underwear.

So you’re suggesting. Leaving the rust as is.... Without protection is better than applying truck bed coating over it?

If that’s the case then why does truck bed coating even exist? Let alone people forking out hundreds of dollars to get it out on.

Rust can creep under paint, powder coatings, plated surfaces and even spray or roll on bed liners. If there was a magic bullet against rust the Navy would be using it by now. Simply coating over rust doesn't make the problem go away, hence the shit pants and clear underwear bit. Also spraying a bed doesn't mean it will never come off.

 

Ummm Dude, I graduated college 5 years ago with high honors. I’ve written plenty of papers.

This isn’t about “where Your got your source from” Its science.... these are facts... Polyurethane can be formulated to be waterproof.

Fact 2.) US Navy does use truck bed liner. Company called Durabak has the Navy contract. It’s on 11 aircraft carriers.

 

Waterproofing something does not mean the substrate is not going to rust if the coating is physically damaged.

 

Here things rust if you just look at them to long it is a recurring problem

 

I've used rustoleum bedliner for several applications on my 2nd gen on my wheels, front bumper, grill, and parts of my frame. Obviously rust isn't an issue where I live. What I don't like about it is that it traps dirt and will never be totally clean even with direct power washing unless I knock down the texture with sand paper and clear coat over it. I've done that on my grill and bumper. Also the substrate stuff in the rustoleum bed liner is more like grains of sand whereas the particles of whatever they use in more expensive paint is larger. I don't know about the duplocolor stuff.

On my first gen I'll be spraying the whole thing with bed liner once I have all the body work complete. I plan on spraying it with raptor liner since it's the hardest curing DIY paint I've found and you can tint it to any color you want. Monstaliner is sweet too. I got some paint samples from them and it seems a little more rubbery than other professional and / or expensive DIY bed liners.

 

Definitely go with the raptor liner. I mean. It’s all in the prep. People think once you spray your ok. Def not the case.

 

Definitely. I used to paint houses before I started teaching. Now painting ends up being part of every mod I make to my truck lol
