    Hi there.

I just replaced mine with an aftermarket tailgate bought from ebay @ https://www.ebay.com/itm/330991666118 for right at $200. I see you stated you want stock, but this is close.

Here are my before and after photos. I'm 100% happy with the product. 20190721_141935.jpg 20190721_142029.jpg

I was eyeing the same vendor for a tailgate on the 250. OPs good experience might just pushed me down that path one day lol

    Thanks!

If you do this, you have to remove all the hardware from the old tailgate (which is easy). The other issue I had was getting the mounting bolts out of the old handle, which didn't happen. I had to buy a new aftermarket one. I think I bought it off RockAuto ($28 dollars with shipping). Some of the mounting bolts use a torx bit, so you'll need to make sure you have one. Other than that, it went very smoothly.

yeah believe me that was a one time mistake.

Not to mention they break and then you've got glass shards to deal with

I avoid bringing bottles wheeling and camping because they're a safety hazard and bitch to clean up if they break... plus aluminum takes less energy to recycle and weighs less

I just replaced my dented up tailgate (step side) with an OEM unit, unpainted for $259.00 from Toyota of Escondido. I did re-use all existing hardware. Sister-in-law had it painted at her shop. Took me an hour to swap all hardware and install.
    The fit/ finish is perfect.

$259 for a tailgate?? Damn, my local Toyota dealer wanted nearly $400 for an unpainted fender lol.

Appreciate the honest feedback brother, even if it wasn't up to your expectations. It will help someone in the future guaranteed.
It is nice to know about this option, I hadn't heard of being able to buy a fresh painted new aftermarket tailgate before.

That does seem very fairly priced for OEM. Nice find and paint hookup, you lucky dog. Good paint and labor is hella expensive

I agree that a OEM tailgate for $259 is a steal even if you have to paint it. When I had my 1996, someone backed into my tailgate with an SUV at a walmart parking lot and their rear mounted spare tire actually put a dent in my tailgate. I can't stand riding around with a dented vehicle, so I ordered one from Ebay. It was aftermarket, and I think I paid around $90 or so. As others have mentioned, you do need to transfer all hardware from the original, which is easy. The hardest part is painting since you want it to look good. But, in my case, as I like everything to look stock, I wanted to replace the decals that said TOYOTA and TACOMA LX. THere is a guy named James Dean [I kid you not!] who runs a shop that all he does is decals. He does an excellent job and I can highly recommend his work. I actually did a video showing how to install the replacement logo. Here is a link to his website, and below that, I will put a link to my video where I show how it is done:

Oh heck, since I am "showing off" a little, I might as well go ahead and post a video I made of my 1996 in January of this year, only a couple of months before I sold it. Dang, it looked good!

In the video, "Now for the Tacoma LX sticker in bottom corner I measured a half inch on the old tailgate up from the bottom but I swear it'll look better at 1 inch"
I can't believe you didn't offer to sell it to me first.... That's not even half way to it's life span yet. Still a teenager. Woulda been a great scooting around town little 2wd for me. Tell me you didn't trade it in to a slimey dealership?! Tell me you sold it private party!?
