Camera on a budget

Hey guys,

Been wanting to get into making YouTube videos from when I go shooting, wheels, and such. Always use my iPhone and my gfs go pro 3, but I want to step it up but still keep it on a budget. I've been told Canon EOS Rebel T6 is a good option with the bundle kit from Walmart being $400. I've also looking into the canon powershot SX730 but not sure if it'll work better then the T6.

Ideally I would like something like the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V 20.1 but it is also $1000.

So for all you blog/video/camera know it all what should I go with to keep it around $200-400 (on the lower side if possible) that can get some slow mo of shooting stuff but also have decent quality to be able to shoot some sunset and sunrise time lapse stuff?

Then! What kind of editing software would you recommend as well?

This is a little difficult for me to answer, mainly because of your budget. Im not saying its impossible but definitely makes it a bit difficult. If you flat out want quality budget just get one of those gimbal things for your phone or gopro. Silky smooth video is better than high quality vomit causing shaky video because you also mentioned slo-mo video.. your gopro (depending on model) shoots like 60fps and even 120 fps which will give you some killer slo-mo stuff, and a decent mic. will aid in the sound. I'm sure it'll be under 400. If you want a dslr then definitely get on craigslist, used market is key for budget things in photography. Id go with the t6i (used). you'll get a slightly better camera for about the same price. Don't forget you need a Microphone.. internal Mic. sounds like crap on anything, even on high end dslrs. The thing with photography is it can be extremely expensive, and 2-400 honestly won't get you much if you want a dslr. Maybe save up a bit and go for the samsung nx mini, or the canon g7x.. its what a lot of vloggers use due to size and flip out screen and I believe they shoot 4k video as well with a 24-100 focal range for the canon. sorry bud, i really wish i could give you a clear answer. If budget is a real issue, shoot with what you have and make the best of it. Good cinematography goes a long way, a $10k is worthless in the wrong hands, phones are incredibly capable these days and even shoot 4k which not even the new canon 6d mk2 which costs 2k does. Set a goal, both in skill and future camera while you work on getting better and saving some money on the side. Look at the used market and editing software whatever you can find for free because some can get real pricey.

Thanks man, been looking at that G7X and the T6 and might save up for them. As far as mics go is there any mic I should look at getting to help with filming?

My gf and I share a camera and go pro currently. Gopro hero 3+ so not sure if that does good slow mo?

It is still a tad pricey considering your budget but the internal mic is total crap on any camera regardless of their price. Investing in a mic is huge! Especially if you'll be vlogging and speaking in front of your camera or just speaking at all. Definitely think about budgeting for one when shopping for your camera or hell even on your GoPro. I really can't stress the importance of external audio enough. A quick google search will explain in ways far better than I can.

Only thing you need for some good slow-mo is higher frames per second so you can get some smooth, slow-motion shots. For your average shots, shoot in 24fps..(I think the GoPro does 30fps). If you know you'll want it slowed down in post, then bump up to 60fps or higher if your GoPro has the ability. It's essentially taking that many pictures per second, so the higher the fps the slower and smoother the shot will look. Not all cameras shoot in high fps like the GoPro so keep that in mind when shopping around if you want to do a lot of slow-mo.

But again, start with what you got for now brother! At the end of the day that's what it's all about.
