Hey y'all have a 1996 Taco question. When my truck is running there is a ticking sound. Now this seems to only be in the cab, and under what i think in the steering column. When I am accelerating, even just a slight bit this sound goes away. Any ideas? By the way it is a 3rz motor if it matters.

Cams and valves, check your oil level

I am no mechanic but that sounds pricey.... My oil level is perfect.

Funny I'm a mechanic. Odds are it's your cam lobes tapping the valve stems

best to address the issues a.s.a.p.. also, because you have a 4 cyl, your valve cover is pretty well exposed. you can check the cam and valves very easily. but you don't seem to have mechanical experience. you should get a book to start with.

here's a link to the one you need. get familiar with the sections of the book and read up on "valve adjustment" for your motor. see if you think you can do it. or at least the part where youre checking the clearance. youll also need a metric feeler gauge set to do the work. . other than the feeler gauge, youll need your standard tools. wrenches, sockets, pliers, towels, etc etc.

Don't mean to step on your toes or anything, so please don't take this that way......but on the 3rz the cam lobes DO NOT touch the valves stems. They create oil pressure on a Bucket Shim, Hence the term " Shim and Bucket Type Valves " which is what his motor has.

Now your motor has what is called a EVAP system that uses vacuum pressure. You have a leak in this system. Its clicking rapidly because its attempting to purge the air out but cannot because its leaking off. Your hearing it in the cab because its located right against the driver side firewall. It goes away when you give it gas because your increasing the vacuums and temporarily stopping the purge. It is called the VSV or vacuum switching valve. its more of a relay and its doing its job. But you need to tighten the lines going into it, or replace the valve if its worn. I am a mechanic and just did this job last week. hope this helps you. Its located on the right angle of the drivers side engine bay. Do some research on this and you will see.

I wish valves on these 3rzs were as easy as say a cummins 5.9 or even a old Detroit. Unfortunately you could tune up about 4 Diesels by the time you do the valves on a 3rz. I like diesels to :)

regarding the possible evap issue. you can easily hear where the noise is coming from if it were either the valves or the VSV @nickj604 was talking about. when you get home from a drive, the noise should be happening. so just open the hood and stick your ear next to the cannister and around the top of the engine. it should be pretty distinct.

here's the evap setup on my truck with the vsv circled. its rigth above the front driver tire. its more or less the same design. another thing about the VSV valve is it sometimes makes a bad clicking noise that travels throughout the cab. i think there was a recall on it. you can probably also stick a piece of rubber between it and where it mounts to try and dampen any noise coming from it. but thats only if this is the issue.

I know what part you all are talking about i just replaced my whole vacuum line. So if i already replaced the lines could it need replacement? does this happen? But also i dont seem to see what you are talking about unless it is the part i am holding in the second photo. Also side note, is my motor supposed to be slightly tilted?

P.s. I am just waiting for the clown vomit comments! Lol

    I like that blue.......

yes, the part you are holding is the VSV. if, when the truck is warmed up, the switch is clicking, then the switch is good. its supposed to pulsate. sometimes they just pulsate really loudly. and if yours is mounted on the firewall, it will be noisier! try stuffing some slivers of rubber from a bicycle tube between any metal to metal surfaces around the switch.

yes your motor should look slightly slanted. think of it this way. the power steering reservoir is mounted according to the tilt of the motor. is the reservoir sitting straight? yep

If you just replaced them all now it's ticking isn't that the issue though?

Ah gotcha, I would check that valve out first, but it is fine to drive with it ticking like that, no worries.

Ill probably just replace it... The truck has 266k on the motor so i am expecting things to start going wrong now, but the rebuild, and making it what i want is fun too, just built a tarp tent shelter for my bed. image.jpgStill needs a few tweeks but when the snow we just got melts it will be finishing up.
