New to TacomaWorld, thank you for having me. Just recently had my truck at the dealership to be assessed for the pealing of white paint, issue that I am sure has been mentioned several times. Just looking for advice and to update on the situation. The dealership stated that Toyota will pay $2ooo of the $4000. Dealership was unable to provide me any documentation of their submission or what Corporate sent them. Making a long story short, I called Toyota 1-800 and escalated the case. During this conversation I was informed that Corporate Toyota possibly denied providing any assistance; however, the dealership is willing to give me 50%. Essentially make a $2000.00 profit off their problematic paint. My case has been escalated and was told that I should hear something by Tuesday of next week. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Any pictures of what it is doing? What's being repainted?

I pressure washed mine last weekend. The paint is still attached.
OP, what is the color of the primer?
Edit. Yep, that gold colored primer is the common denominator on a failing white paint.
My has a grey colored primer.

Not quite. The dealership didn't paint your Tacoma, the factory did.

The manufacturer (corporate) already informed you they possibly denied any coverage, and the dealership offered to cover 50% of the estimate. Dealerships aren't corporate owned/operated, they're an independent entity in the Toyota reality. Means they're coming out of pocket/writing it off in order to help you - corporate won't reimburse them on this if there's no SSC coverage for them to claim it against. Which there currently isn't for 040 Super White.

To be honest, from what you're saying it kinda sounds that dealer is trying to do you a solid. Better than most of the complaints lodged here about the peeling paint. Materials & labor aren't free.

My first color choice was Cement but since they were so hard to find I was really hoping for white. I am sure glad there were none around for me to buy..

Good luck OP. Hope you get this resolved. I think you’re doing everything you can. Seems like you just need to wait now.

That looks terrible. Did they offer to repaint the whole truck for $2k or just the affected areas ?

At least they didn't tell you they would cover $0. Still sucks, good luck with the fix.

Personally, I'd take the offer as Toyota still refuses to acknowledge the small % of Super White Tacoma failures.

From what I've seen & read anecdotally, this seems to mainly affect 2016-17 3rd gens, MFG out of the Mexico plant.

FWIW I have seen so many other MFG's in Canada with horrific white paint peel. Imports and domestics. I go out of my way now to check out more and more white vehicles since I now personally own a white vehicle for the first time ever. I have yet to see one 2nd or 3rd gen Taco here with paint peel. I personally have a 2020 Super White and zero issues. I don't do anything special. Just basic washes.

We have a huge fleet of white Work Trucks at work and the majority with paint peel are 90's/00 Chevy's trades vans. Also, we had some older Dodge's that failed too. Lots of Fords in the fleet but they seemed to be okay.

If I was still unhappy after the paint job I'd consider selling the truck and looking at another color and or year. That's me tho. I did see another member here that had their 2nd gen completely repainted and it looked awesome when it was redone.

Yours looks like hell so good luck and hopefully it gets resolved in your favor and satisfaction as it really sucks. I expect that unfortunately anything could happen to my 2020 too, but being a Toyota chances are consistently lower.

Hell, my brand new 1992 Toyota 4X4 Truck with the notorious 3.0L head gaskets failed twice. Once under warranty and once out of warranty. Toyota and the dealership covered the repairs both times. I loved that truck. Sold it after 14 years of solid service. But well maintained. Sold it with 226k Km for a really good price back in 2006. Had an offer in one day, sold it the next. Could't believe how much I got.

    Oh yeah, welcome!

welcome to the club. hopefully toyota can figure something out. I'm pretty sure this color code has been around for 20+ years

How do I find my primer color? Are there some primed and unpainted areas in the engine bay or something? I don’t currently have my truck available to go look at it myself. Thanks.

I don't think there is a primer code. I had a body repair done on my truck s few years ago and saw the primer color. Numerous threads have failed paint pics with golden color primer.

Makes me glad I traded my 2020 super white DCSB for a 2021 army green DCLB. The white did look really sharp when cleaned and freshly waxed though. I never had any problems with the white but seems like every time I cleaned the frame the paint was chipping off it. Mainly around the welds. Maybe the frame isn't meant to be cleaned:notsure:

I have read about the white paint issues, however looks like you have a 5 year old truck. Paint looks terrible in those spots. What has the dealer offered to respray? the whole truck or just those areas? if it is the whole truck, $2K out of pocket is a screaming deal!

Toyota already lost a lawsuit but Tacomas weren’t part of it.
