MORE DETAILS
Cuts off gas flow automatically when pressure is reached.
Pay attention to :
1:You need to turn your bulk tank upside down so liquid flows out of it.
2:You need to chill your empty tanks so that there is a lower vapor pressure in the empty tank than the bulk tank.
3:Your refilled tanks will not be totally full, but this is good because over filling can cause them to vent gas if left in a hot place.

When our power bill hit over $250 last month, I decided to break out the propane heater we had to buy last winter cause the one I already had decided it was done working when the power went out for over a week during some major, freak snow storm we had.
I Immediately ran into an issue though. First the power bill drained me, I am on a fixed income, I had two little 1# canisters, one empty 20# tank, one full 40# tank. The 40# tank only has inside threads so the regulated hose only fits the empty 20# tank. Now, I can drive 30 miles for $2.99 propane or 12 miles for $3.99 propane and fill the 20#. The cost of gas kinda makes the choice pretty much equal in cost...about $20 bucks either way.
Living up where we do, I find Amazon Prime is so much more cost effective than having to drive to town any time I find I need something. I remembered hearing something about refilling these little 1# cans so I checked it out.
Now the Coleman cans do say to not refill BUT if you do, the DOT says it is only illegal to transport re-filled bottles. You can legally refill and use these canisters at home or camp. They also sell DOT approved bottles for under $20 you could use to transport legally.
For $8.59 I decided to give this a try and boy am I happy I did. I couldn't even get to town and back on less than $12 right now. I ordered the adapter Saturday afternoon, nursed my two cans through the weekend and received the product Monday. During that time I began reading all these "horror" stories of people taking hours and even days sometimes to get a can filled only partially most times. Freeze the little one, heat the big one etc etc...
Much simpler and quicker to just release some pressure from the little can as you are filling it just like they do when you fill your bigger tanks duh. Two ways to this. Push down on the pin inside the male connector, but this requires you to remove the bottle and will freeze your hand off pretty quick if your not careful or the easier and way quicker is to use the built in pressure relief valve.
This adapter works on either sized propane tank, if you get the quick fit style you will likely only be able to use the 20# tank so you should get this style because you will not be limited to only one style of tank. Screw it in (backwards threaded) and turn the big tank over, screw in the empty 1# can. Reach under and open the valve on the big tank and you will hear the swooshy sound of the liquid transferring over to the small can....when it stops making noise you will want to pull up on the relief valve with either some bent needle nose pliers or hemostats. It is just a round pin in the hole next to the bottles screw top. I find with the valve at about the ten o'clock position is perfect. You want it higher than lower, you want the liquid in, the pressure out. Just give it little pull, tss tss, until you see it spray out some mist. Maybe one minute per bottle once you get comfortable with the process.
I weigh my empty tanks and then I weigh them when they are filled again. A 1lb tank actually holds 1# of propane. This method will allow me to overfill by about 2.5 oz's, If I am going to use it right away, I won't bother to bleed off the excess, but if I plan to store it I will by either pushing down on the inside pin in the screw top ( at an angle and upright or the relief valve or even the adapter it's self you can take off the big tank, put on the little can by itself and the excess will come right out the other end as you twist it in. be ready to untwist and PLEASE don't try this inside the house.
I am now heating my house for around $1.50 day, @ apx 75 cents per bottle. Paid for itself on the first day. I will be hitting the campground dumpsters this summer to collect me a stash of free empty cans for next winter. I suspect I will buy some of those brass caps with the rubber seals so I will be more comfortable stashing some in the house. Be careful, be smart, do it outside only and just be mindful of what you are doing. My heater just finished up another bottle, so I will swap out bottles, take a shower and go refill my empty one. Boo Yeah!
It turned out to be the safety pressure lock. It was intended to avoid overfilling by ensuring some pressure differences. However, it severely restricted the flow especially for empty ones. Just bought another adaptor without safety lock. It worked really well. Within 1 min, all my empty cans were refilled to 70%.
It turned out, this one can be converted to non-pressure protected one easily. Simply unbolt the center pin toward 1 lbs bottle. The small cap in the orifice can be knocked out from the other side using a punch and hammer. There is nothing but a spring and ball to ensure the pressure gap.
The pressure protection is really a bad idea as overfill can still occur. Just make sure the small bottle never exceed nominal fill. It should be all good.
